I'd like something like that... but I wonder if it could be done with a secret hidden unlatcher instead of a key. Seems like the time you really need it, you don't wanna be hunting around for the key.
I've got a lockbox for a handgun that I use at the beach house to keep my 1911 outta hands of kidses. It has a key, but there's a secret way to pop it open without a key that is really ingenious-- and convenient when you're in a hurry.
We have a 'lockbox' too. I don't use it a lot since we don't have any kids around...

Yahknow... on a similar subject, I've had the oddest hankerin' lately to get a 30-30. Regular Winchester 1894.
I can't explain it, and I have positively zero need for one. It's just something about wantin' to go out and use a lever action. Some things I just cain't 'splain.
Had one. Found it not to my liking. Saw a good-looking used one just hte other day...'60's IIRC.

Based on your description, I'd say you were looking at a Finnish-made export version of the M44. This would have been post-WW2. Who outside the soviet bloc would buy it puzzles me. The Finns were required to be politcally neutral, but the military equipment was, after the war, strictly soviet-style. Still, they didn't do badly for kicking soviet ass in the Winter War, and then allying with the nazis just so they could kick more Russian ass.
If there were traces of grinding, I'd say they were battlefield pickups "sanitized" of the soviet stain. Again, they would be intended for potential foreign (military?) sales, some day.
Don't feel bad, you gave it a good shot, and provided me with some ideas for speculation.

Howdy all! Hubbys at an astronomy meeting so I have uninterrupted time on the puter at least for another hour or so.
If it was important, I'd wear the key on a chain around my neck. Also, I'd look into inletting metal plates inside the box around the lock and tap for bigger screws, to make prying harder to do. It's not a steel vault, but I suspect it could still be improved.

Been readin'. Wife's had the computer this evenin' since the connection got knocked out today. Apparently I'm the only one who could figure out how to "disconnect the modem from the power source" that would be in laymen's terms "unplug it and plug it back in..."

The problem is that I'm going on travel Monday and I have to get two new outfits (the old ones shrunk significantly over the holidays - what's up with that??). Dunno if I'll get to do that with the snow. Eeeek!
