The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, I hated depending on a Tumwater cop to come and be nice, but I figure maybe they only abuse teenagers.

Yah... knowing them they'd probly just curb-60 the poor guy, which was about the last thing he needed. :-)

But it is true that he has the advantage of not being a teenager in Tumwater.

I'm the sort of personality that often gets taken advantage of by persons begging for help. I always want to think that I'm helping somebody that really needs it. But then I usually find out later that I've been scammed by somebody playing the game of emotions. There's been several times I've given a twenty to somebody on the corner with a really convincing sign explaining how horrible life has been to them.

But then again, I'm the guy that picks up a well-dressed couple in the rain in downtown Seattle, stranded late at night after the buses quit... only to find out that he's a pimp and she's a hooker... and don't I want to party with them? [ack... no... I don't...] Drop them off and find out the next morning that they'd stolen about $2K worth of camera gear from my bag in the back seat.

[sigh] No good deed ever goes unpunished.

It is probably uncharitable of me, and I shouldn't think this way, but any time someone in need asks me for help, my first thoughts fly to all the headlines talking about missing people and dead bodies somewhere. I tell myself God can punish me later for it, but until then Im not going to make my reunion with Him easier for the criminal.

Im hardhearted I know.

Yah... it was really a trauma at the time... that was about three months salary back then. I was just a deck ape on the Polar Sea. Took me months to get a new camera.

Got an 80% - Washington state would have been perfect except my finger slipped and dropped it before I could drag it to the right place.

Well, yes, that is by definition, uncharitable of you. :~\

I've worked a lot in Social Services. I wouldn't say it makes me complacent, I am pretty wise, but I can look at people and see past a lof of the chaff, good and bad.

96%

Though I didn't seriously misplace anybody but Delaware. Everywhere else was in the ballpark, with the red "correct position" mostly covered by my placement.

Reading the comments on that thread, I see "square states in the big empty part" was a common complaint.

As for Delaware, I got brain-lock. I believe I dropped it on Cape Cod, knowing I was way off.

Anyone tell me how I could do that for real....

Yeah - it's rough when you get central states first. I got 90 something the first time, but I just pulled a 100% a minute ago this last time around!

I remember. Did you get a call about one of your lenses later found at a pawn shop? I have a faint memory of something like that.

Everyone is afraid of the unknown. Poor people aren't all unknown for me. I wasn't about to give this guy a ride, but he wasn't a threat there in the parking lot. Just really down and out. And hurt. I don't know who beat him up or why, but it makes me feel pretty dang lucky that I've never been totally alone without someone I could call for help.

Nope. Never saw the stuff again. I did report it to the Seattle police, filled out a report, but nothing ever surfaced.

I got 88%. Mostly because my first one was tennessee... and I dropped about a whole state away... all the other were pretty much right on.

Dang it.
