Oh! And pressing and holding the power button makes it go to a setting where the screen is really too dim to read, but not off. Is that right?

It can make it really dim.

You might want to check your power settings ... go to Start > Settings > System > Brightness first, and make sure all is sensible there, then click on the "Power Settings" link and make sure you're happy with the settings there.
