The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Nope. Home. Have to go pick up Dad in a few minutes, though. One of their cars broke down, and now that Margaret is working and going to a place an hour north of here a couple days a week for violin building, they really need both! And then, to top that off...the town SHE'S in got a foot of snow today instead of the wet dusting the rest of us got...she's snowed in until the plow comes through.

So...Dad is stranded at work since she can't pick him up. I'm going to go get him and may let him take my van tomorrow. I have zero cash anyway, so there's no point in my going anywhere tomorrow.

Zero cash is a good way to keep you home for a reading/writing weekend, chica!

Drive safe!

First, a cartoon that caps off a wonderful week (did Arafat die yet?) that included having the RATs self-destruct on my birthday. Things don't get much better than that, except showing off a baggie of what's left of Osama.

Second, for the very first time, I'm totally tapped out of Hobbit Hole knives for now. Thanks to Corin's tip, I shipped out knives today to a Navy F/A-18 maintenance officer, the head of Navy ROTC at UC Berekely (!), an Army helo pilot, and a couple of ex-GIs and/or their kids still in service. More knives will go out when my next shipment of 35 comes in. But it sure is weird seeing the shelves empty.

Finally, I've bought some sample items to evaluate as stocking-stuffers for the troops. After product review, I'll be happy to give one away to anyone who knows an especially deserving troop.

I'd also like to hook up with some other topic here on FR to invite everyone on FR to visit with their own ideas and product reviews. I think we scare away 90% of the FR population, even though this is the chatsiest, friendliest place on FR.

I bet! I think (hope/pray) we are going to be able to send some bucks to ya this month.

I don't know what you'd like on the FR idea side.... put maybe you could post a thread on it or something? That what you mean?

I'd like some kind of joint effort with some other thread like Freeper Foxhole or something. Have traffic sent to some common location, rather then the HH, where they think we spend all our time talking about lembas and metamucil. I'll have some dandy product reviews for friends/relatives of troops overseas, and hope others could contribute to the presentation, too. Candy is dandy, but Thorlo socks rock.

Evening G'nad; sounds like a good morning's work. You planning on hauling them to a sawmill to get your garage lumber? Sounds like Big Red done you proud.

Candy is dandy, but Lembas would be a lot more practical.

Heh.... I am proving the reputation right, aren't I?

I agree that we are too cliquish probably to draw in many new people to an effort that is troop-support focused and not based on our particular (no I didn't say peculiar) fellowship. I think a new 'thread'. Somehow named and jointly kept going by both the Foxhole and the Hobbit Hole posters and really including an effort to get participation from everyone would be good. Using either the Foxhole or the Hobbit hole would not work. Has to start new.

There may be someone better suited to write the 'mission' post and post it, but if you want me to, I certainly would.

EGE; pretty good call, we could tell the area met two of the parameters for a jurisdictional wetlands, hydrology and hydric soils, couldn't tell about the hydrophitic vegetation though.

A "Mcguffin" is the thing that everybody in the story is after but it doesn't really matter what the thing is. Like in North By Northwest the mcguffin is the microfilche inside the pottery thing.

There's hydrophitic vegetation in the hollow we're sending the water ~to~.

Excellent, by increasing the water flow you're assisting in keeping the soil saturated and/or inundated promoting the prevalence of the hydrophitic vegetation. Kudos.

You sure you should be talking 'bout this in a public place? Oh wait, you said hydrophitic.

My bad. ;-D

I'd be eternally grateful, because I have absolutely no skills in that area.

Omar Sharif, John Noble in boozy brawl

Thursday, 04 November , 2004, 09:44
London: Egyptian actor Omar Sharif reportedly rammed a table lamp into his fellow actor, Lord of the Rings star John Noble's face after the two got into a violent argument at the Umaid Bhavan Palace in Jodhpur recently.

The two actors, who are shooting in the desert city for the movie One Night With the King, which also stars acting legend Peter O'Toole, were reportedly quite drunk when an argument turned into a fist fight following which Sharif hit Noble with the lamp.

Although the reason behind the argument is not known, 72-year old Sharif, who has starred in movies like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, is said to have stopped immediately after he hit Noble with the lamp. Noble later had to be helped by the hotel staff as he picked out glass pieces from his face.

Spokespersons for Sharif and Noble refused to comment even as the filmmakers decided to go ahead with the shooting of the movie, the next day, despite the fact that Noble was not present on the sets.

"A bunch of people were having dinner at the hotel and they had been drinking heavily. The conversation developed into a major disagreement between John Noble and Omar- although no one is quite sure what it was about," The Mirror quoted an onlooker as saying.

"Their voices were getting louder and louder and then the next thing we knew there were fists flying everywhere. Omar then grabbed a small lamp and hit John in the face with it. The shock of what happened seemed to bring the fight to an end and John was later picking bits of glass out of his face with the help of the bar staff," the source added. ANI
