The Guild 10-7-2004 Retailers embrace the poncho, betting the trend will last into fall
Star Living ^ | 8-24-2004 | Style Section

I'm praying retailers are dead wrong. Wasn't a fan of the poncho in the 70's and my heart hasn't grown any love for them in 2004.

Please excuse the insult if you like them but they do nothing for me. And I've never seen a poncho that says, I'm the one, we'll look gorgeous together, buy me! Plus those annoying little fringes inevitably drag in the onion dip when I'm at a party trying to get a little nosh.

Hey! You got onion dip on my fringies! Well you got poncho fringies in my onion dip! *We pause to ponder the possibilities...*

The hostess and I let out a simultaneous Nahhhhhhh! Nothing good ever comes from combining poncho fringies and onion dip. However, the dog, trying to nip at the onion scented fringies did become my best friend.

Now from the experts on ponchos:

Apparel retailers across the country have been begging for something new, a fresh look that every woman doesn't already have in her closet.

This summer they got one: the poncho.

Crocheted with airy holes, off-the-shoulder or down to the knee, the '70s-era accessory has made a big-time comeback and is a hot product for clothing retailers headed into the fall shopping season.

Teenagers are wearing ponchos. So are their mothers and grandmothers. There aren't many fashion trends that can claim such reach.

Adding to the poncho's appeal, it disguises less-than-buff arms and comes in a friendly one-size-fits-all.

"Women got tired of everything being so body-conscious and bare," explains David Wolfe, creative director with the Doneger Group, a consulting firm that advises retailers on fashion trends.

Retailers from top to bottom have embraced the once utilitarian cover-up. At the low-end, Wal-Mart has them displayed front and center in refurbished apparel departments. At the high end, Neiman Marcus is showing a striped cashmere poncho in brown, black and gray for $245.

In between, Marshall Field's is offering a black open-knit poncho for $29.99, while Target is featuring a cheap-chic, flower-adorned pink version for $12.99.

The women's apparel industry certainly could use a boost. Sales of women's clothing fell 6 percent in 2003, the third consecutive year of declines, a reflection of the recession, lower-priced foreign imports and a lack of hot items.

Sales of women's clothing were flat through the first half of 2004, but they could jump 4.5 percent by year-end, predicts Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst with NPD Group. If so, it would be the best showing in five years. Continue the Poncho Pitching

Here are some examples, some good, some bad, some just plain ugly.

Yikes, there's not enough poncho - or caftan - in the world if Liz doesn't stop popping those Biggie Fries.

NICE gun.

A couple of years, or so, ago, we had an entire thread pulled down for showing too much skin (in some mod's mind).

Today's stuff is way tame in comparison.

You're not in deep trouble. Just no nekked pictures please, we run a nearly smut free thread here.

And please keep in mind I can post pictures too.

Here's one just for you! Aren't Lynn and Dick adorable? I hope I can smile at my husband like that when we been married as long as they have.

Lynne Cheney talks about her husband, Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s performance in the vice presidential debate earlier this week in a townhall meeting Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 in Miami, Fl. (AP Photo/J. Pat Carter)

Now that's love baby!

Phsstpok looks at this thread of some what bad ponchos and his first thought in a post is, well, obvious and you think he needs more encouragement? Yer makin' me meshuganah in the keppe! :-)

Did you see my post 100?

I'm so farklempt. And having grown up in Scarsdale I know what farklempt (or as Michael Myers would say "verklempt"), meshuganah and keppe mean. And I'm not looking for a Tsatskeh.

Mazel Tov, and a big grin.

Just no nekked pictures please

no naked pictures, I promise. Though I actually did post a naked drawing of Princess Deja Thoris (from Edgar Rice Burrough's Princess of Mars stories, which is being made into a movie now) and thought long and hard before doing so. I'm serious when I say I meant no offense and would never do anything to demean anyone, particularly anyone who frequents FR.

As to Mr. and Mrs. Cheney, I have a personal connection to them through my folks, who have spent a good bit of time with them. Several times either both my folks or just my Dad have gone on (business) fishing trips with them.

The Cheney's are truly good people.

You'd have to be from Wyoming, or someplace similar, to fully "get" Dick Cheney, particularly his SOMEWHAT dry senes of humor, but I have enough family from there to fully understand who and what they are. I admire them more than anyone can imagine.

See my post right above yours, the one that says 'To 100'? :-)

And I'm not looking for a Tsatskeh.

You'd most likely be a k'vetshing shlimazel searching for a tsatskeh 'round here so you're in luck, as luck would have it!

Welcome to the Guild.

p.s. I don't usually speak yiddish, but I glicked across a good site soooo... thought I'd shpiel for a bit.

Your folks get to hang out with the Cheneys? Very cool. We here at The Guild happen to think Dick and Lynn are outstanding people. And the many of the ladies here think our VP is very studly. Handsome, great sense of humor and smart, he's got it all! Lynn is a very lucky lady.

Of course Lynn is beautiful, has a great sense of humor and is very smart so Dick is equally as lucky. They're a great couple, we respect them immensely.

You don't have to be from Wyoming to appreciate the VP's humor, he cracks me up and I'm from Floriduh!

Hey, I'm from the Ohio Valley (or as they say here, the "Ah-Hiya Vahwwey") and I love Cheney's dry wit. Never cared for the John Edwards-style eager puppydog demeanor. He always looks like he's about to wet himself.

The Kerry Enigma: [Alexandra] Pelosi captures the Democratic nominee unplugged.
Reporting by Catherine Siepp

Alexandra Pelosi's Diary of a Political Tourist, a documentary about the 2004 Democratic primaries that premieres October 11 on HBO, is, among other things, a reminder of why John Kerry came off as surprisingly commanding and manly during last week's debate as he did: Normally, of course, he seems wavering and robotic, and never more so than in this film.

We get our first glimpse of the candidate here when Pelosi approaches him to ask an innocuous question: "How's your speech?" And he can't manage a simple, direct answer to even that, turning to an aide and asking, "How's my speech?" as Teresa glares suspiciously at Pelosi and her camcorder.

Kerry will blow it at Friday's debate just like he blew today's press conference. Ready your fork.

Your folks get to hang out with the Cheneys?

Used to, before my Dad retired and Mr Cheney became Mr Vice President. The company my Dad worked for as a senior VP, and who I now work for as the chief PC "architect" (read that as propeller head), has access to the finest salmon fishing in Canada (we used to own the land and kept the fishing rights when we sold it). We still take high mucky muck customers and assorted luminaries on trips there to "get to know each other better." I've never been privelaged to go.

Even after my Dad retired he would fill in when folks had to drop out at the last minute (he set up the whole system and set the pattern in his job as marketing VP). My Mom went along several times, including a couple of times with the Cheney's. My Mom spent many years in Wyoming and my Dad recovered from medical treatment after WW2 there. They had alot in common with the Cheney's. In a state with a total population of around 300,000 that's not hard ;^>

Dick and Lynn are outstanding

Ditto to that. One of the things that upsets me the most about "our crowd" is those folks that succomb to the "popular media" propoganda about people like Dick Cheney or Newt Gingrich. I know plenty of Bush supporters who mutter about "getting rid of Cheney" based solely on what the MSM tell them about him. We have to stop basing our truths on what propoganda Dan Rather is pushing this week!

My folks also know Ross Perot. My Mom's description of him is "crazy as a bitsy bug." Kinda slanted my view of old Ross. ;^>

Hi, Betty,

I just saw this thread at the top and had to post--I cannot stand ponchos.

I was watching Good Morning America today, hoping to catch Ann Coulter (she must have been on earlier?), and they had a segment on ponchos. Uggg...

And while we're at it, what about skirts & shirts with brown, orange, and yellow diagonal stripes?

70's clothes--they were ugly when I was in high school, and they're still ugly today. :)

Here's one, that was quickly pulled from WBAY, the ABC station in Green Bay:

| 7 Oct 2004 | Associated Press

US TopRaces

At this hour, President Bush has won re-election as president by a 47 percent to 43 percent margin in the popular vote nationwide. Ralph Nader has 1 percent of the vote nationwide. That's with 51 percent of the precincts reporting.

Bush has won 324 electoral votes in 33 states. He is leading in 4 states for a total of 43 more electoral votes.

Kerry has won 105 electoral votes in 8 states and the District of Columbia. He is leading in 5 states for a total of 48 more electoral votes.

Nader has not won any state and is not currently leading in any state.

In the 435 U.S. House races, the Republicans have won 173 seats and are leading in the races for 56 seats. The Democrats have won 145 seats and are leading in the races for 56 seats. Independent and other party candidates have won or are leading for 3 seats. If these trends continue, the Republicans will retain control of the House.

In the 34 races for the U.S. Senate, the Republicans have won 14 seats and are leading in the races for 4 seats. The Democrats have won 13 seats and are leading in the races for 3 seats. Independent and other party candidates have won or are leading for 1 seat. If these trends continue, the Republicans will retain control of the Senate and will gain 3 seats.

Curious enough.

Hey, I'm from the Ohio Valley and I love Cheney's dry wit.

then you would probably love all the people of Wyoming because that's the way almost all of them are. Except the ones who have gone full boat Stephen King from the winter isolation.

I've always said I'd love to live in Wyoming, so long as I knew I didn't HAVE to live in Wyoming (particularly through a hard winter). Ever heard the phrase "high lonesome?" That's Wyoming.

It's God's country, but it takes a special kind of person to love it year in and year out. I'm not that together, but I can appreciate those who are. The Cheney's are some of the best to come out of that cauldron.

My Grandparents homesteaded and then helped found Riverton, Wyoming. I have an Uncle and Aunt (seperate, bachelor and widow of another Uncle) still living in Riverton, along with another Uncle and Aunt up in Dubois (foothill of the Rockies). The Uncle in Riverton who passed away died at age 85 while riding his motorcycle! That's a MAN from Wyoming!

Thanks, loddie. My heart can't take much more of these daily polls. Don't have a whole lotta nails left to be bitin'. Plus, we've got a tied race here in NC with Bowels and Burr.

And I've heard rumors that those garments are the real cause of global warming. :-)

Need a quick pick me up?

President Bush (news - web sites) smiles as he is greeted by supporters during a campaign rally in Wausau, Wisc., Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004. With less than a month until election day and another debate showdown Friday with his Democratic opponent, Bush is focusing his campaign on key battleground states and stepping up his criticism of Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) on national security and the economy. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

Now that's what I call a colorful crowd!
