DING DING DING -- We may have a winner in Dr. Phil??
Unfortunately I did catch the Oprah show yesterday, it was like a train wreck, I couldn't look away.
The show's theme was 'Get Out The Vote' with Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz (isn't she the one who doesn't bathe?) and of course, everyone's favorite, P. Diddy. I've never witnessed so much stupidity in one place,,, ever.
The tension was thick, Drew and gang along with Oprah wanted to say, 'vote for Kerry' in the worst way but since these organizations are "nonpartisan" they kept telling the audience "that our lives depend on voting" and other such nonsense. Here, a quote from Oprah:
"If every woman with children voted, then candidates could no longer just pay lip service to the education of your children in this country, "Oprah says. "If every woman who has a child really cares about the welfare of her children, the health care for her children, and the education of her children, which is freedom in my mind, then [things] would all change." [And Oprah backs the candidate who would outlaw school vouchers if he could, but then she doesn't have children...]
Cameron Diaz had a emotional moment during her visit with Oprah:
During the show taping, Cameron is overwhelmed by emotion.
Oprah: Cameron is having a moment. What is this about?
Cameron: Well, I'm so proud of my friend [Drew Barrymore]. She took a whole year out of her busy schedule. She's a producer, she's an actor she did this to take the time to educate people about it. And then I started listening to people saying, 'Oh, I don't vote because it just doesn't affect me. And I just got overwhelmed, because I think this is the best country in the world. And it just scares me that we're just going to squander it all away. That we're going to lay down and let people take it away from us.
The theme of the day seemed to be that if you don't vote somehow, someway, somebody will take away your civil rights, control over your body and start lynching black people.
Cameron at one point tells us that voting is important because womens rights to our bodies will be taken away. It appeared to me that once that left her mouth she became aware that it sounded too much like she was promoting abortion rights so she came up with possibly the wackiest statement in history. She said in mostly incoherent sentence structure that rape could become legal. And Oprah, with a straight face (although her eyes were saying, OMG, OMG, OMG!), agreed.
Watching Oprah's acting ability while she interviewed these nuts makes it hard to understand why 'Beloved' bombed.
