Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Then why would using a different bit make such a difference?

We have two Pet Smarts in Tulsa, one carries horse tack one doesn't. So I guess they can all be different. The one that does carry it carries SLT.

Honestly? I wouldn't tie him to it. I'd work around the trailer plenty, quick tie him when you are saddling and have to tie him there, but I wouldn't leave him tied hard. Tie welds on trailers can break, and he could go down, cut himself up or bang up the trailer. He may get better over time... but if he has a wreck where he breaks the trailer, he will get worse.
Boy - maybe someone moved a trailer with him tied to it. Will he ground tie? If it's a stock trailer, leave him in it instead of tied outside. Or weld a couple of hooks on the trailer so you can take panels along and put him in those instead of tied to the trailer. I don't know if he'd eventually get over it if he spent time by the trailer (ground tied or in panels) instead of tied.
Heh... you would have to ask that! Ideally, and with a horse who understands what you mean, I bet it doesn't. I think because the snaffle is a contact bit, people usually don't ride with it slack like they would a curb, I never see slack reins on even young western horses in snaffle, they are usually riding on contact and sometimes with a martingale. They try to neck rein on contact, which gives a mixed message.
Boy can they. At the endurance ride, DIL had stud double tied to the trailer, so that if he decided to leave, he'd have to break two ropes, not one. He sat back and broke the trailer. Trotted through the entire camp, then stopped and waited for her to get to him, went back to the trailer gentle as a lamb. He was not frightened of the trailer or being tied, just being an a$$. I agree, I wouldn't tie any horse afraid of being tied to a trailer, to much chance of serious injury.
Trailers just aren't strong enough... and too many things to cut themselves on.

No, I don't think he'll ground tie. But good idea about the panels, and working with him just being close to the trailer without tieing him there for awhile.
Your reasons for not tieing him are exactly why I haven't done it much. Mack has reinforced welded my tie rings on the trailer, I don't think they would break, but it's the injuries to himself that worry me.

I was thinking about Rusty's trailer problem, and was wondering if there was any way that you could run a lunge line through a tie loop or sturdy tie up spot on the trailer and work with him that way. That way if he does decide that he wants to back up or be horsey he can't hurt himself because you'd bet there to let the lunge line out. My biggest fear with letting him deal with it on his own is getting a hoof caught up under a tire or something.
I'm still thinking about what you all said about working getting him comforable close to the trailer without tieing. Makes so much sense:). The simplest solution and I never thought about it.
