Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Good morning everyone.
STILL not warm enough for ME to ride, BUT warm enough for the crazy teen age daughter.
They went riding yesterday AND the day before. (brrrrr) Our son has 2 friends staying(playing new video games) and the friends 'dumped' the son to ride. hehehe.
Yesterday, they were pretty bummed out cuz there weren't enough horses to go around. So two came home. DUH...they didn't 'think far enough' to saddle up the daughter's friend's horses.
So they want to do that today.
Kinda neat to see BOYS getting horsey fever!
Tomorrow might be a Mom-gets-to-ride-day. supposed to get into upper 50's!
No luck in finding his former owners then? What a shame. Maybe they dumped him because of his "itchy" problem. Is he neutered? What is Prednisone? Some kind of allergy med? I have the same problem with the orange cat. No matter what I did with Frontline, shampoos etc., he still scratches like crazy. You have a big heart, but I don't know about your pocket book. Look at the expense and decide.
I think they are going to be a no show.
Becky
If he has a flea allergy, one flea will do it. I'd forget shampoos, and use Advantage. Prednisone is a steriodal, stops the itching long enough for the skin to heal. The licking and scratching is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and the skin just itches more.
Seriously, on your kitty... we had a kitty with a flea allergy who would lick all his hair off his rear end. I'd put him on a round of prednisone for 10 days, treat him religiously every two months with Advantage, and he'll recover completely.
No shows :~\ how rude!
Gonna ride anyway or just go in to work?
I spoke to soon. They're on their way.
Becky
May the best thing happen!
About your new dog. Well I might try treating him once. If he has continous problems after that....well, you know me:)
Susie has allergy problems like that. It is a pain having one scratching and licking constantly. But since she wasn't a stray, and I raised her, I've tried dealing with it. Advantage and Frontline is not working around here anymore. My vet that died said no one was having luck with it anymore. HE gave me shots to give her. Now with him gone I haven't done much for her. Bad me:). She seems better now then she did when we were getiing all the rain. I'll have to do something with her tho once summer hits again.
Becky
I have to admit, overlooking the "honeys" the old cowboys in Alabama taught me how to back a horse trailer as good as the pros.
A lot of the old west cowboys were Southern boys that had no homes to go back to after the War of Northern Aggression.
And we know that you might actually know what you're talking about sometimes............honey. :~)
Oh if he's ours, I'll treat him. I just don't want to go and incur a vet bill if the owner is going to claim him the next day.
Well, I know with lost horses, any vet bills have to be paid back. If you report a lost horse to the police so there is a record of when you found it and keep track of the expenses, any vet bill and feed bill is suppose to be reimbursed before the animal goes home.
Don't know if that would work about dogs.
Becky
It's certainly an issue I've seen raised on People's Court often enough :~D
Well you know, that only seems fair to me.
Becky
It's exciting when any kid gets excited about horses:)
Neither one of my kids were too interested when we first got a horse. Then one day I went to a playday with a friend in a neighboring town. After that, I found out when our town held them. I told the kids, I've never forced you to do this sort of thing, but this one time I want you to go. If you don't like it you don't have to go back. The week after the playday, we had 2 more horses:) My son now team ropes, and my daughter does barrels.
I think horses are great for kids, because it is something they can do their whole life.

Waiting on the people....
tapping....
Funny this is one time I'm showing a horse that I feel I've got a snowballs chance in hell to make the sell, so I'm ready to get it over with....probably sell him, LOL.
Becky
Seems like the way things work.
Since you're not... I'm nervous for you... ;~D
Hmmm.... we really should start a new thread soon.
But not right now...
Gonna go out and work on my drainages... got rain comin'.
Not to change the subject but I'm involved in a discussion about kosher slaughter. Peta (whom I do not support) got some hidden camera video in a kosher slaughterhouse. Since the jewish people on the thread are trying to convince me how humane the process is, I decided to look at the video, which is authentic, according to news reports. It sickened me. It is horrific, to put it mildly.
