Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
My mare was like that with strangers, not so much with me or my trainer. She barely wanted to tolerate the vet being in there though. That only lasted a little while, by the time the baby was a week old, she'd relaxed a lot.
I was reading somewhere here that the stallion will go right back to them after birthing? If I was the mare I'd kick him in the jewels if he even looked like he might be interested:')

I really appreciate all the help and advice, like we said before, they are bigger than sheep! We didnt plan on them foaling this time of the year, we got them all last Christmas and put them together and the event just happened. I pray that they will be ok. I know Sugar is a second time Mom because when we got her she wasnt in such good shape as the previous owners had allowed her foal to still be on her at 15 months. He was bigger than she was and you could count her every rib. :(
She soon fattened up and is such a wonderful horse. She may not be the most prettiest but she has by far the best nature of any horse I have known.
I am not sure whether Misty has foaled before, but at 15 years I expect so.
No, mares go immediately into heat again, so they're even willing! That's why I was asking. And I wondered if there was more distance than just a fenceline between them, mares and stallions have been known to try right through the fence. With barbed wire, you can imagine how that goes :~\
I don't know where sharn went but DJ said he was leaving work so I guess he's on his way home. Good thing he works evenings huh? :')
Yes we do. As for the stallion, we are going to sell him in the new year.

This is new to me too. It's exciting and I'm learning a lot. If I have my own place I may breed mine a year from Feb just because... Right now I have a lot more other horse stuff to learn and I don't have the time.
He is great and that is why we need to sell him. James Mama is now blind and bedridden and wont be with us much longer (artery problems) and his dad isnt far behind. I just dont get the time I would wish to keep the horses like I want too. It's full time looking after his parents and our three children. (they live with us).
Its not what we planned. It's not what we really want, but horses need to ridden and enjoyed.
Just a word of caution since you don't know, if she hadn't, she may need to be held for the foal to nurse the first time. Older mares more often have trouble accepting foals than younger ones... the instincts fade with years of independence I think :~\

Usually, that's all it takes, is to hold her still and keep her from knocking this rude invader on it's ear... even good mares are pretty sore down there at first.

Lightning is running all over the place in his field. I dont know whats up with him!
Just another question Hair. Are you not able to tell if a mare having contractions? are there no outward signs like the abdomen tightening up and relaxing.
I Imagine. Well I need to go back out, I went on the balcony and Lightning is tearing up and down his field. I need to go see whats going on. I'll just grab another coffee............
