Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Well, yes if she looks and gets a flashlight out!
Sugar is in another field and quite a way from her at the moment. Sugar hasnt bagged up yet, but her belly has been pointed, her backside changed shape and looking at her right now, she doesnt seem quite so enormous. Strange.
back to Misty, she is doing ok, no new one yet.
am going back outside to check on things again...........busy are you i your nice warm office? LOL
:O
Okay, keep an eye on Sugar too. She might not bag up before she foals. Is she by herself or with the stud? If she doesn't look as big, it may be the baby has dropped - that will make her sides look a lot less bulky.
yes, as a matter of fact. Getting ready to lock up and go home soon. Check on the horses for me, will you?
Brrrrrrrr! It's getting colder.
The horses are all in seperate fields right now. Sugar is in the field next to Misty, but they are at opposite ends right now.
I'll get a bale of hay ready for you, and a nice warm blanket and thermos~! LOL
They should be okay - how cold is it there do you think?
34 at the moment, 26 wind chill.
You might get some old towels to have on hand - dry off babies if they show up tonight.
Does it matter if they can see each other..........If they are in seperate fields?
No, it's better if they are used to being together. That way they won't stress out.
Thankyou, I already have some ready. Figured it would help to warm a wee foal up.
Will you bring them in?
How many horses do you have? You sound like you have done this many times!~
I'm sorry, telephone rang. I meant it's good that they can see each other.
We have an enclosure right behind James(deaconjim) workshop that will keep them warm and out of the wind.
Have twelve right now. Four mares will be foaling next spring. We raise a baby or two every other year, sometimes every year. We try to be on hand at foaling, in case of trouble and so that we can imprint the foals. That makes all the difference in the world when it comes time to train them.
They are some so different. We had 2 babies this spring. One could be petted and the mare just stood there. The other would start kicking the stall door if anyone even tried to look over to see hers. What do you do when you have such a protective mamma?
Most mares are okay if you've had them awhile and they trust you. We had one mare that had lost two foals before we got her, one by being run through a fence by other horses. We hadn't had her long and she was very protective. In that case, if there's no trouble, you just leave them alone. No sense stressing them if it's not necessary.
Sounds like yall are going to have a long night:')
