Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
So you all ready for Christmas. I've just got a few more things to do, other then the cooking.
Tonight Mack and I and the kids are all gathering up, and we're going to take the RV to go see Christmas lights. This could be fun and interesting:). Mack says no problem, but I can't imagine driving that thing around neighbor hoods.

Good morning!
Very cold here this morning, 19 degrees or so.
Poke berries, is that what those pretty purple berries are? Are they good for anything? We have tons of them in our woods, none in the pasture.
Mornin. I have today off and a sore throat:'(. Gonna go check on the horses in a little bit.
I'm all ready... although I just remembered a couple stocking stuffers we bought that I haven't wrapped yet. Wonder where that bag got put?
Hope you feel better. I am working today, and off tomorrow. We didn't get the amount of snow that they had in Western Ohio. It's rain and freezing rain. Day times highs this weekend, are only going to be in the singles digits. Kids are leaving for Florida on Christmas day. Guess who gets to take care of all the critters. :(
Poke berry plants can grow very very big. Big flat leaves and a thick stalk. Purple berries that stain. Very hard to get out. I've never seen the horses eat them, I do try to cut them down, they can take over. I've heard they get toxic after they bloom...
But you know that song, Poke Salad Annie:)...not sure if that means they're OK to eat at some point.
Becky
Hope you're not getting sick:)
Becky
I've done that, forgot things I've bought:)
You know we've never done the stocking thing. The kids had nice stockings that I cross stitched for them, but they were just for decoration. I guess since my mother did'nt do the stocking thing, I never did.
Becky
I like the stocking thing... and they were filled with little presents and candy and oranges. But the best part was that if we kids got up too early on Christmas morning, and we couldn't get mom and dad to wake up yet, we were allowed to open our stocking presents first, and there was usually something in there that would keep us busy till a reasonable hour.
It wasn't till I was an adult that I started hearing how many people did the stocking thing. I was surprised. I thought it was just something that was done in the old days.
Becky
We still do them ;~D
The stockings were our Santa presents too, in the game... The bigger presents, though maybe not all of them, would get placed under the tree as they were wrapped in the week before, but the stockings were left by Santa.
We're thinking along the same lines:)
I was just thinking my mom put out the small stuff a little at a time, (when we still believed in Santa, and for me that was a long time, 4th - 5th grade). But the big stuff always came from Santa. That is something else that has surprised me after I became an adult. The parents who don't want Santa to get the credit for the big stuff??? They want the kids to know it came from them. No big deal either way, I guess, but you know eventually the kids will realize it all came from mom and dad. Anyway, I've had to laugh at myself because I was under the illusion for sooooooo long that everyone did things the way we did:), and was surprised when I found out they didn't.
Becky
I guess old habits hard to break. My kids say I'm predictable. Everyone gets socks, drawers... but I make sure they get a fun gift too. My most creative gifts are little stuff I put in stockings though. I take paper bags for extended family when we visit. I never thought much about it until I skipped the "tradition" one year and they all wanted to know where their "stocking" was. Now several of them do this instead of gifts:')
I've never understood how the Santa thing worked with friends that opened presents Christmas eve....
We've never been allowed to not believe in Santa. If we didn't want to believe, that was fine, but we wouldn't get any presents! That was what mom always said. She's gone now, but I am going to guess dad would say the same thing if I brought up any doubts. ;~D
We are weird I guess. We don't do Santa. I guess it was no big deal for me caz all the old man ever brought me was socks, drawers and a coat:')
I suppose there was always some clothes.... but the best stuff was the toys, my dad is a great gift buyer. Still is.
The daughter pulled the filly's hind feet up with a soft rope last night. Just a little fussy on the right one. More time and work and I am sure she will be fine. We still might try and get her used to hobbles, just in case.
Lucky girl:') I have to go finish my shopping for Eddie today. I think a collector doll and a 2004 bear. Maybe a Gretchen Wilson tape too:') I need to get a glass shelf. I have a bunch of dolls still in boxes in my closet.
Well, that's progress!
