The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I didn't know if I should laugh or be mad. He totally destoryed a new round bale in about 15 minutes. I'd had it delievered here for my mare who I was bringing home to breed. I thought I'd let him "munch" on it as a treat for a little while because he doesn't get hay that often.

We have several people around here with camels. It is strange to see, driving down a hwy. and theres a camel. For a while we had some people who ran an exoctic animal farm. Camels, Kangaroos, ostrich, etc. and it was situated right on a hwy. Place was almost like a zoo.

My son and DIL knew the people and got to see baby kangaroos still in pouches. Kristy was always going to take me to see them, but they sold out before I got the chance.

I don't remember now why, but the baby kangaroos were taken from the mothers, and the lady kept them in her house in pouches that hung on doorknobs. She bottle fed them, and they would snuggle with her alot.

Seems an appropriate time, if there is one, to post my pics of pony and Bay when she is in heat. He has only the faintest instinctual memory of what she wants, so he just follows her around and chews on her butt. As the week goes on, she'll get more and more frustrated, running around him, backing into him and squealing (I can disntinctly hear her saying "What do you need, a map?") and finally she just gives up.

Rocky is pretty short. And my mare was pretty tall. The first time we bred her, she was a maiden mare and I wanted things to go easy for her:). We dug a low spot in the arena to stand her in.

Later we bred a taller mare, and didn't put her in a low spot, when everything was over you could tell from the way he was walking that he'd gotten a charlie horse in his hip from the stretch:). I felt kind of bad for him.

I've been told that mares will actually squat down for a short stud. I've never seen it yet, but choctawsquaw has a short stud too, and she saw one of her taller mares squat. I guess instinct tells them what to do. She has a little dog whose mother is a pit bull and the father is a chaua...one of those little mexican dogs:). This puppy is the cutest thing. Very tiny.

"What do you need, a map?"

LOL. Load her up and bring her here. What a tank her and Rocky would make:)

This is rather ambiguous considering our conversation today:)

LOL!!! Poor girl! Cav used to have a mare who was the worst I've ever seen. She'd even back up to a thorn bush when she was in season. And there was no WAY he could ride in front when we were trail riding coz she'd just stop in front of my gelding and look back over her butt like "Don't just stand there, DO something!"

Do you know if UPS will leave packages if no one is at home to receive them.

I'm expecting my shirts and transfers today, but need to go to town too.

UPS usually will just leave stuff... Unless the sender sends them signature required.

They always would at my house coz there was NEVER anybody at home at our house during the day. They'd just leave it out on the porch behind the glider with a rug thrown over it.

Oh what lessons those babies would learn from their mother...

If someone tries to catch you, RUN!

If someone tries to ride you, BUCK!

If someone tries to put yucky wormer in your mouth, bob your head up and down like a yo-yo and clamp your teeth shut!

We'd have to seperate them from birth ;~D

I was thinking the same thing, but more in from your description of the pony, that she might be a very protective mother about you messing with the baby.

But as far as the baby itself, we've bred Rocky to some pretty hateful mares, but the babies themselves have always had Rocky's dispostion. That's what I like about him, he's not dominate in his color but he is dominate about giving babies his dispostion.

Well, there we go.... We separate them and let Bay raise the baby and teach her horse manners... ;~D

Did I tell you when we used Bay as a babysitter for Bob's weanling, that he would actually let her nurse from him when she needed comfort? We were never too sure what was goin' on in the pasture. ;~D

I swear this conversation is just stuck in the gutter today ;~D
