We passed the Southern Baptist Convention building. Earlier in the day, Gore had made a point of telling me that he and Clinton used to pray together in the White House. I asked him which church in Nashville he and Tipper attended now.
There was a pause in the front seat.
“We’re ecumenical now,” Gore said, finally.
Tipper said with a laugh, “I think I follow Baba Ram Dass.”
“The influx of fundamentalist preachers have pretty much chased us out with their right-wing politics,” Gore added.
The writer said, "I asked him which church in Nashville he and Tipper attended now." I interpreted their answer as an embarrassed pause because they no longer go to church (now that it doesn't serve their political image.) Did you take it that way?
I loved all the references to the servant. Every time they went back to the house, the servant was putting food in front of Big Al.
No, I believe that may have been taken right after all the blook drained out of him when he found out they'd been caught red-handed giving forged documents to CBS.
This whole thing just reminds me of a Jr. Hi prank.
That's exactly how I interpreted it. The Gores' "Christian faith" might be seen as no less superficial than - and just as much a political prop as - the Clintons'
You're right, that part was amusing. (That, and the fact that Al wouldn't pour his own cup of coffee at breakfast. Oh, boy! More coffee, boy!) BigGayAl eats with gusto now, according to the article, because he doesn't have to worry about looking svelte for the TV cameras, or some such nonsense. Lamb chops and seasoned greens for lunch, let's dig in!
Al was in Pittsburgh yesterday, bashing Bush for the entertainment of various braindead union folk, and he certainly didn't seem to care too much about his appearance, from what I saw on TV news. His thinning hair seemed to have been combed with a wet paper towel, he was pudgy and looked uncomfortable, like his pants were too tight around the waist.

There were also several members of the author’s family including her mom and dad, known to the world as Tipper and Al Gore, and Ashley Schiff, whose brother Drew is married to Kristen’s sister Karenna. Mrs. Gore, looking svelter than the world saw four years ago, also now looks young enough to be her daughter’s contemporary. The former Vice President too was looking like he’d shed years from his brow.
Editor Lieve introduced the author by telling us how she’d read the book in manuscript form one night standing up in her kitchen (Glamour ended up serializing it), and that it was what her grandmother used to call “a Bronx book” – you “started reading it on the train in the Manhattan and the next time you looked up you were in the Bronx.” Ms. Gore, taking the mike explained that she took up writing as a vocation because she thought it meant she’d never have to “give a speech,” all so not true now that she’s begun hawking her novel.
There were a lot of people in the room who’d already read the book, all thumbs up. the project was the brainchild of producer/impresario Harvey Weinstein who set it up simultaneously for Miramax Books and Miramax Films. Ms. Gore is writing the screenplay also. [Oh goodie!] Congrats and kudos for Kristen Gore and Miramax.
Just thinking about that meaty mitt of al's touching me makes my skin crawl.

Is Tipper's hairdo not the most juvenile you've ever seen on a woman that age?!
I've been struggling with what to do with my mop, at my age I think it's too long also and too much up keep and too hot during summer. I'm leaning heavily toward a Laura Bush cut.
Laura seems to have the same thickness and texture as my hair so it might work. Now I just have to get up the nerve.
Someone else who needs a haircut, among a myriad of other things...

Journalism ethics/legal question:
If the CBS documents are indeed fakes, does that release CBS from any agreement not to reveal the source who gave them the forgeries?
There has been much speculation as to who might have prepared such stupidly transparent forgeries. I think the old shiboleth, "The simplest answer is probably the right answer", probably applies here.
They were prepared by some 20-something nerd who had NO CONCEPT of a world that existed prior to Microsoft Word and other word processing tools. Only such a person would have been unskeptical of the raised "superscript" th's and st's in the memos. Only a person totally unfamiliar with typewriters would have been oblivious to the fact that old technology didn't perfectly line up margins, centering, etc. In this self-centered fool's mind, the ONLY technology is the one he's used all his young life.
It will now be interesting to sit back and see how much pressure other media outlets apply to CBS to reveal everything about their "news gathering" process. I think I'll go pop the popcorn!
Gotta run - I'm supposed to man the GOP booth at the county fair, even though the fellow who recruited me hasn't bothered to tell me where to go or where to find the materials I'm supposed to be handing out.
A more-fun question:
The commentary shows have spent HOURS blasting Bush's Guard service based on these apparently forged documents. They would certainly owe their viewers---and the president--an apology.
But the really fun question is: Would they have to re-evaluate all the miles of footage they've spent skewering Bush for the "16 words in his State of the Union speech"? Words that, according to the partisan media, were based on ---gasp!--forged documents? Tee hee!
I thought they came from papers released by the White House? I heard that from Fox interviewing someone yesterday but it was in passing and it could have been a dim shill, for all I know.
After the CBS story ran, some reporters asked the white house if they had the documents. The WH simply gave them copies of what CBS had faxed out. The copies still had CBS's fax line on the top.
These forged papers were not allegedly part of any official files. CBS said they came from Col. Killian's "personal secret files".
To non-news addicts (there are some out there!) this headline reflects badly on the Bush team.
