Why Doesn't The "World's Smartest Woman" Have Her Husband In A Better Hospital?

This is a serious thread, I am not joking about this issue.

I was talking to a very respected surgeon earlier tonight, and that was their question to me.

Columbia is a teaching hospital, the surgeons don't get as much experience, they have to also teach. Plus even among the City's teaching hosiptals, it's not the best.

So why Columbia?

He had an Angioplasty and a stent inserted. He doesn't have a zipper. I do. And should. They seem to need to get in there awfully frequently.

An Angioplasty is usually done through the Femoral artery in the groin, not by cracking the chest.

An AP story said he had initially gone in with chest pains on Thursday. He then spent the night at home in Chapaqua and went back in on Friday where it was decided that he would have open heart surgery.

What is strange is that they let him go home. No doctor or hospital is going to let a 58 year old man, with chest pains, go home.

I also forgot to mention that for non-emergent CABG cases, there is a host of other studies that should be done before the surgery, including carotid artery assessment and pulmonary function studies among others

One of the reporters on MSNBC was talking about what medication bubba has been on and he mentioned Plavix which means that he has known for a while that he has blockage.

That is strange. Maybe they were hoping the could solve it without cutting him open. One of the doctors on MSNBC said there has to be more than one or they would not operate and would do an angioplasty.

My Dad just went through it and they did a double quadruple bypass on him. I don't care what anybody says it is a huge deal. Afterwards though, people can feel decades younger. Amazing stuff.

My sister-in-law had a valve and reconstruction of her aorta at Columbia. There are only 3 other cardi surgeons in the country that could do that operation.. The King of Jordan, the one before, had many heart problems and had his hear surgeries. When the elite has a bad ticker in NYC, they go to Columbia.

You are so right. Even if the initial EKG looked O.K., they still would not let him leave before they did blood work the next morning followed by a treadmill test. Good catch. Very weird that he left the hospital that night.

Chest Pain is a misnomer. Mine was a mild "indigestion" with excoriating pain in my lower jaw. I never head anyone say you might have pain in your jaws. If he was on a blood thiner that needs to get out of his system. I was only on 82mg aspirin and they wanted at least 5 days Free of that.

BTW..My "chest pain" started in early April and my surgery was 7/27/04 at UCSF...

Au contrair mon frere..

Ifhis pain resolves, his EKG is normal (no signs of ischemia), and his initial set of cardiac enzymes is normal (no sign of infarction or CHF), they most certainly MIGHT let him go home with arranged follow-up for further testing.

They might recommend he stay, but if he wants to go home, who's to stop him?
