NEW YORK - The hit USA Network series “Monk” is losing Bitty Schram, the Golden Globe-nominated sidekick to series star Tony Shalhoub.

Schram will not return as Sharona, nurse and assistant to Shalhoub’s obsessive-compulsive detective, when the show resumes the second half of its third season in January.

“‘Monk’ has decided to go in a different creative direction with some of its characters,” a USA spokesman said. “Bitty will not continue with the cast and we thank her for her notable contributions and wish her the very best.”

This can't be good. The interplay between Schram and Tony Shalhoub is what made the show so special.

Oh, that's bad. They'd better have a really clever 'nother idea.

First they lose that wonderful acoustic guitar theme song and now Schram.

Monk is one of the very few TV shows I will watch. I think this will be a mistake.

shalhoub was one of the "stars for peace" or whatever, sponsored by moveon.org. It is a show I am boycotting and I hope it is cancelled soon.

Definitely upsetting my world, :-). Might have to have the cable company remove their lines in my neighborhood over this.

I love this show. Too bad. Ms. Schram was great in the part. I remember her as one of the women baseball players in "A League of Their Own".

I really hope they don't stray too far in their "new direction". I can't see why they must fix something when not only is it not broken but it works better than any other models out there.

Sounds more like she was forced out rather than left by her own choosing. Too bad. I don't think the show will last very long after this.

"From this seasons last episode:

If I remember correctly, the episode before that one had Sharona visiting her aunt in New Jersey and most of the episode had Monk interacting with some neighbor. Also, the one about his brother had the feel of Sherlock Holmes and his brother, Mycroft.

Why did you have to tell me this? It's the only show I TIVO. And now you've wrecked it.

Better to find out now than during the next season opener and you don't see her in the opening credits.

Personally, I think some other network should snap her up and give her a show of her own - she's that good.

Why aren't you boycotting ALL television shows?

while i did watch it a couple of times and liked it, i never made a point to watch it again when i realized Tony Shalhoub was part of that big advertisement... and i really liked him (Wings, Stark Raving Mad)...
