you can download trialware from norton (and use it for 15 days), the you can at least download AVG. That was what I did for my mom. It worked. Then I was able to do a windows update for her. So far, no complaints.

One of the things that is happening is that when I do a google search something hijacks the browser and gives me a pseudo-google search results page.
