Maybe I'd better just keep hacking at it.

Heh, pun intended?

Seriesly, does the university have a fencing club, or self-defense classes? You might try hanging out at some of their practice sessions, to see the real thing in action.

Taking a self-defense course or a martial art course would be good exercise, too.

That might be a good idea - I'm still surprised at all the clubs there are up here! I'll check it out...

They actually have a martial-arts class I'm kinda interested in. I think it's called akido... something like that. But I can't tell if it's once a week (doable) or three times a week (impossible) so I'll have to look into that,

Goofy stuff ping... closing ceremonies of the Olympics on NBC now. Pickup truck full of watermelons just pulled into the stadium, I don't know why...

Aikido is a good defensive style... uses a lot of throws and holds, very few punches and kicks.

That's why I was interested in it. It doesn't sound like a "flashy" martial art.

I can suggest a series called Conquest, produced and narrated by Peter Woodward (the son of the great British actor Edward Woodward), for the realism versus stylized fornms of combat.

I loved that series. I wish they'd bring it back with new eps.

Except for the few oddball ones, like bull riding and figure eight racing.

The training that you receive, whether it's samurai sword, longbow, rifle, or phaser, is intended to burn enough neural pathways in your brain so that when the sh*t hits the fan, you'll instinctively remember some move that will allow you to get in the killing blow. But along the way, you'll instinctively throw away everything you knew about elegance, style, or fair play. And you'll have no qualms about bringing a gun to a knife fight.

I love the early scene in Butch Caassidy and the Sundance Kid where Paul Newman goes over "the rules of knifefighting" before going up against "Jaws" Richard Kiel.

Hi Ruthie... watching the Olympics closing ceremonies on NBC. More goofy stuff than you can shake a stick at... oh, wait, they *are* shaking sticks at it!

Did you ever figger out what the watermelons were for?

$189?! How on earth? Did it "fall off the truck" or something?

Nope, never did... they appeared and then disappeared, symbolic of something significant I'm sure, but I have no idea what...

Shortly after that, they had people dancing around and jumping through fires.... then a crowd chased a guy in a dress riding a bicycle until he fell over. I don't think the falling over part was intended, or it would have made a nice Benny Hill sketch.

Did it "fall off the truck" or something?

No, but it probably didn't add anything to the bottom line. CompUSA had 10 of them at $389 with a $200 rebate. "Pretty good" means "not top of the line", but not "will be obsolete tomorrow" either. No monitor, no speakers, no printer.

They sold out as fast as the people lined up outside could get in...by the time I got there after church, it was long over.

It got the store some added traffic, I imagine.

Not as "interesting" as the protests in New York maybe, but not nearly as mean-spirited... ;)

That is a good deal. It's not wonder folks grabbed them up!

Better luck next time, XGI. *grin*

I've avoided all the news channels today for that very reason. The Weather Channel is the closest I got and that was strictly for Frances updates.

The RNC convention starts tomorrow night and I can't wait!

Wow, dancing Chinese chicks in short skirts playing zithers and drums!

Why do I get the feeling that the zithers and drums are secondary to the short-skirted Chinese chicks?

*wink*

I'm gonna hit the sack early tonight. See you all tomorrow!

I must admit, those were several words I never expected to use together in the same sentence.

Have a good night! ;)
