The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Over the years, I've thought that the "perfect" flood/hurricane/tornado-proof home would be either

A converted old submarine buried to the conning tower (designed to be under water anyway, and how cool to climb down the ladder and spin the wheel on the hatch), or

a connected series of previously unused underground tanks gas stations keep the fuel in, again buried and converted to living quarters (designed to be buried, to keep liquid on the inside from getting out and therefore vice-versa) or

a concrete bunker with aero- and hydro-dynamic curves so that high winds or unexpected water would just go around.

Someone else had that last idea.

Monolithic Dome Homes

I would want to be able to secure heavy steel shutters over all the openings before evacuating.

Liked that one. Haven't seen a copy since 1983.

Have Space Ship, Will Travel

Found it in paperback a couple years ago, currently 3 feet away :)

Dunno what an LL is, and I don't see a fireplace listed, but you can pick the rest of that and specify room sizes etc. in this estimator:

Residential Online Evaluator v1.1

My "dream dome" is guesstimated to cost just shy of $70K to build.

Anybody heard from Corin since his last trip into 'the attic'?

Corin wasn't getting much done in the attic, so he went to the gym.

It's the same old chain of events. I can't get into the attic to be productive until wife is ready to get stuff out for the children's clothing and toy sale. After Nana got better the "chair" and both walkers went up there.

I got thru a couple of boxes this morning, but I had to sit at the top of the steps to do so. Couldn't get in any further.

Wife is doing a "clean sweep" of her desk and the living room. That's where she sets up for the consignment sale because all the clothes have to be ironed, labeled and on hangers. Once she's done, then we'll get to work on the consignment stuff and I can go back to the ~attic~.

Plus, we need a strategery to hide from Luke the toys we're selling.

Dunno what "LL" is either but I just saw it in a real estate ad.

One ad was advertising a lot with deer. Oh yeah....big seller with me. /sarcasm.

Okay. Let me know when you want to watch "Time Chasers" then. BTW I might be able to copy some of these once I get my second VCR fixed.

I have a decision to make...I've never seen Reservoir Dogs...and no one has seen this season's finale of Last Comic Standing. Both are on at 8. My tape machine is otherwise occupied.

Suggestions?

The version of "Hamlet" they're spoofing is blasphemous, redeemed only by the spoof. It's a dubbed German version, with one of the dubbed voices supplied by Ricardo Montalban. The MST3K crew were tricked into picking it by Pearl who, to demonstrate her mercy, decided one week to allow the crew to pick their own movie. The crew tried to think of a nice, safe classic that no one could possibly screw up. . .
