Someone once said that the Napoleanic Wars were the last gasp of the "pre-humanist" age. The barbarity and ignorance of the era --- and the nobility and capability --- are equally showcased. The science is atrocious, but the music is delightful. I'm frankly addicted to the historical period, and the Master and Commander books really illustrate the times in a way the more rigid Hornblower cannot.
