Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Tree and flower and leaf and grass

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

"Howdy! Just finished a...rather odd music night."

What was odd about it?

Heh - I bet you did!!! I got kinda used to meals while I was gone. Haven't had one in a day and a half. I'd almost drive to Denton to get Taco Cabana right now! Think I'm gonna call for a pizza now! :-)

Well...people missing, and we played mostly new material, and then a lady who wants us to play for a craft fair came to listen in for awhile and negotiate terms, and she really didn't understand that musicians can't just play for almost a full day straight without breaks. It ended OK and she wasn't offended, but it was still a somewhat awkward conversation.

Most people really don't know what is usual for a hired musician as far as time and pay goes. And it's hard for some to understand that for every hour we perform...there are hours and hours of practice beforehand.

Like I said, it was never heated...we just explained what's the standard policy. But it was still a bit odd.

It sounds like you educated the lady. Bet she wasn't wanting to pay what it was worth either was she?

Well...we finally got around to a price. And it's not great, but it's doable, IF she understands that we're doing two forty five minute sets and not just playing from ten to four, which is what she originally was hoping.

Even those are fairly long sets, and we're charging half what most local bands would charge. It's for a church fundraiser, so you cut them SOME slack, but...

Oh ... shall I start?

Today was even worse than that bad day I had a few weeks ago.

Forgive me ... I'm gonna vent.

I may have mentioned during WeddingMoot that the very last email I received before leaving on vacation was a schedule change. I've been working on Sunday since April 2003. I've been complaining about it since May 2003, to no effect. The email I got announced a schedule change --- from Sunday - Thursday to Tuesday - Saturday. This despite the fact that I had been asking for a Monday - Friday schedule.

Before I left, I asked for a change, and got it ... back to Sunday - Thursday, with an extra added kicker: instead of 8a - 5p, my new schedule is 6a - 3p, starting July 6th.

The day I got back from vacation, I learned I had a new boss, but not a new job. NewBoss seemed rather friendly, and I was glad, because OldBoss was an absentee leader: his team hasn't had a meeting since January 2004.

Last week, NewBoss sent out an email about this interactive training we were all supposed to do. When he came by my desk Thursday, I told him I would do the training (2hours' worth) Sunday, when everything would be quiet.

So, on Sunday, the Fourth, I worked 8a - 5p. Three people are scheduled to work on first-shift Sundays between 9am (when the night guys go home) and 3pm (when the second-shifters arrive). One of the first-shifters took off; the other one came in just long enough to be sick and go home. So I was there from 9am to 3pm all alone. No biggie --- it was the holiday, and a Sunday --- but I was busy-busy-busy ... and didn't do the training.

This morning, my first day on 6a - 3p, I get an email from NewBoss about not completing this training; he wants to meet about it. Well, I was already working on it when I got the email; I finished it up, and when I started my "lunch" at 9:15am, I dropped by NewBoss' cubicle. He suggests we adjourn to an enclosed room.

Whereupon he begins to yell at me! "I don't care what happened Sunday!" and "Housekeeping is very important to me!" and "I've stood behind you and watched you, Rose!" and "You've got some growing up to do!"

It was the last bit that got to me ... I'm 46 years old! Where the h*ll does he get off, saying that to me? You can ask DaBear ... I was shaking, I was so mad! I wanted to hit him! Just ball up my fist and nail him one!

I've since learned that he said almost exactly the same thing to two of my co-workers who also b*tched about their schedule change ... but they're 24 and 28 years old!

Last week, I told someone about the jobs I used to do, writing code for a (highway) traffic management system. That person said, "Forgive me for asking, but why are you here?"

I didn't have an answer for that person.

And then, like a cherry on top of the rotten, glass shard-filled ball of yuck-flavored ice cream that was my day, I was talking to a customer when I realized my glasses were sitting crooked on my face. I thought my headset had jostled them, so I pulled them off ... and the left arm stayed stick behind my ear. (The screw's fine; it's the spring that broke.) My eye doctor is in San Antonio; the optometry place around the corner from our house says $45 (!) to $60 (!!) to replace it. The guy was nice enough to heat-shrink a plastic collar around it, but my glasses aren't fitting my face properly.

Anybody need a broke-down old C and Assembler and Access and Visual BASIC programmer who's not very particular about the platform she works on? I'm learning eMbedded C++ and VC++ ... really, I am! And I can see ... sorta ...

I don't want to leave the Lazy E, but the Lazy E is trying to leave me ...!

That's reasonable, but don't let folks take advantage of ya. We'll have to bring in the elf/dwarf/Gondor army if they do!

I can see how that would be awkward to explain. Makes sense to me, though. When I was watching that band Friday, I especially wondered how long the people playing the woodwind instruments could go without getting out of breath/thirsty!

"You've got some growing up to do!"

I'd o' lost it right there too! Not a way to address *any* employee even if that's what you think!

How long has this guy been a supervisor? Does he have *any* supervisory experience whatsoever? Is this his first time?

Find a new job!!! Leave 'em in the dust! Somethin' better for you somewhere. At least of all things I have a peach of a boss!

Your exercise of restraint illustrates how you're more mature than he is :) That was one thing that really irritated me about one of my ex-bosses, too: they seemed to slip into "parent" mode sometimes and deal with people as kids rather than in an employer-employee relationship.

Anyway, sorry to hear you had such a bad day!
