Sounds like Zelazny is getting high recommendations! :) I don't know what D&D took from "Jack of Shadows". What's that about?

I don't think D&D "took" anything from "Jack of Shadows", per se... but the story has many elements that translate to a D&D-style campaign very well. The story is set on a world which doesn't rotate; on the dark side of the planet, magic rules, while science rules on the light side. Moreover, the magicians on the dark side each have a place where their magical abilities are strongest. The title character, a thief named Jack, was born on the terminator between the light and dark sides; because of this, his power is strongest any place there is a shadow. Jack is also a rarity in that he isn't afraid to travel to the light side of the planet.

I won't give away the story, though, just the setup. ;)
