BEDFORD TOWNSHIP -- It looks like Senator John Kerry will speak at a local high school's graduation in June. A student wrote to both Kerry and President George Bush, asking them for an interview for the Bedford High School newspaper. Kerry's campaign responded, saying it would do one better by having the senator speak at commencement. Bush's campaign did not respond.
A school board member, some parents, and some students have complained, saying Kerry would take away the spotlight from the kids, and turn it into a political rally [gee, ya think?]. Bedford High School Principal Dennis Caldwell says he's already spoken with district leaders, and got their okay. Caldwell says he's been assured that won't happen, and the campaign has offered to pick up the extra costs.
Students we talked to at Bedford say they wanted to make sure any commencement speaker who was chosen wasn't a distraction. They say graduation day is about the students, not about any political candidate.
We asked the Kerry campaign for a comment on this. Ohio Campaign Chairman Jim Ruvolo told us, "We do not view this as a political event. Senator Kerry is not going to make it a political speech. He'll talk about the importance of education."
The Bedford school board will meet on Tuesday to talk about the situation. But principal Caldwell says there's very little that the board could do to change the plan for commencement. WTOL
As if that isn't bad enough, I can't shake the feeling that his campaign wizards are trying to out do GWB's campaign with something GWB's did in the 2000 election.
A young boy named Chaille Stovall decided to make a video of the 2000 primary candidates and continued through the election. He tried and tried to get interviews with both albore and GWB, Karen Hughes was the only one to call him back. Chaille got his sit down interview with then Gov. Bush.
Kerry's wizards thinking they're being clever by doing this commencement, thinking it makes GWB look too high and mighty to lower himself to a high school commencement speech.
Those poor kids, having to listen to Lurch bloviate about life.
BTW, the dems were pretty unfriendly to Chaille, at the end of his video there was an apology from Chaille to some albore campaign dame for "talking too loud" or some such nonsense. They also threw Chaille out of an MTV 'Rock the Vote' party:
During the Democratic convention in Los Angeles, Chaille and his crew attended an MTV "Rock the Vote" event at the House of Blues. He met Wilmer Valderrama, a star of "That 70's Show," a Fox sitcom popular with teenagers, who was exhorting young people to become more politically active. Chaille asked him point-blank, "Do you know who your local congressman is?"
The actor did not. Within minutes, Democratic press aides evicted Chaille and his crew. Link
And just when you thought Kerry couldn't get any more dorky...
