Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I dislike the word "decadence" in this context because it smacks of the notion that all comics stories should be limited in tone and content to kids only, which I disagree with completely. I can't really defend the instances you name, however, since I think Todd McFarlane is an overrated hack, and IMHO the last comic Marvel produced that was worthy of remembering was Marvels in 1994. (I do think that is one of the best comics ever, though.)

I never read Neil Gaiman's Sandman, because I find his English pretentiousness boring; likewise, the Elseworld's story Red Son. I mean, the "What if Superman hadn't landed in Kansas?" story has been done to death, including a Saturday Night Live skit in the 70's that featured a Nazi Superman.

Frank Miller's Batman, however, I have read, both Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One. Yes, he did show Batman as more morally ambiguous; however, this is a character who puts on a costume and beats up criminals. The moral ambiguity was always there, it just wasn't shown since the late 30's (some of the very earliest Batman stories had him killing the bad guys).

So, yes, I agree, superhero comics since the 60's/70's have become less kid-friendly, but I don't see that in and of itself as a bad thing.

Mornin' folks. Here waitin' fer my s-i-l. We're driving down to the funeral together. Got all the ride stuff werked out fer Jr.

PO'd at muh dry cleaners fer ruinin my best white shirt. It's the one I bought to go with my interview suit and I don't usually spend that much on shirts. Put it on this a.m. and there's dry cleaning fluid all over the sleeve. Couldn't wear it so I'm wearin' a blue shirt to the funeral. Don't like tuh do that but...I look good.

Little PO'd at one of the NC b-i-ls. He had Luke last night whilst the family was visitin' at the funeral home. Came back and let Luke come in, which we didn't want. Didn't let him come into the room too far, but Luke saw the body. He's okay, didn't seem to disturb him. But it shouldn'ta happened.

But the amazin' thing is Luke said "That's Papa's body. I want to go see Papa's body." Papa and his brother looked a lot alike.

But how on earth did he know that? He's never been to a funeral and Papa's been dead for a year-and-a-half.

Back sometime late tonite.

Bleh...had some trouble sleeping last night. It was the first night in this new house that we've slept with the windows open. I wasn't aware how loud the traffic is. No big thing...it'll just take some adjusting is all.

Things are good otherwise. New job's keeping me very busy. In addition to leading the church youth group, we've also started up a weekly Bible Study program with some of the yonger couples, and I was elected to the church's Board of Christian Education, which selects and updates the Sunday School curriculum.

It all keeps us busy...but it's a GOOD kind of busy, you know?

How's life treating you?

got the package today. Sorry I havent been on much, the last few weeks have been hectic. We lost a soldier on the 1st of May. Spc Trevor Wine of California. He was killed by a roadside bomb near Tikrit. With that and all the convoys to keep supplies moving you can imagine how it has been here. Please give my regards to everyone, and thanks again for everything. I will write when I have more time.

See you tonight Corin!

Good morning everyone!

I went out till late last night! - Didn't get home till 2:00! Kay had given me chips to gamble with as a present, so we played blackjack and I did OK... after about an hour I was still even money. Then we played craps and we won a little, and then slowly lost what we had over three or for bad shooters. Kay plays about the same numbers so she was out of money too when it was her turn to roll. Well, she bought in for $20 more so she could shoot, while I just stood there, and she ended up on a great roll and about a hundred ahead! So, instead of going home, she cashes in but buys us each a $10 slots card, and I proceeded to lose every spin on quarter slots while she was next to me collecting over and over again! When we cashed out she had three hundred dollars, two hundred richer even with the hundred she had given me to burn.

Recognizing Sean Astin of "Lord of the Rings" fame, Kerry announced, "You all know him as Frodo from "Lord of the Wings," his real name is Sean Astin." After locating "Wings" star Astin mouthing "Sam" from his seat, the rarely flustered Kerry corrected, "Sam! What am I saying? I'm sorry. Sam, Sam.

ROTFL! - What a screwup! Thanks for sharing!
