Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Have you thought about getting a software proxy server?Hmmm, hadn't even thought about that. Should work, cause I think we access each other's computer, it's just the internet link on the router that's busted.
Will have to do some research on it.

Well, time for ecurbh's turn on the 'puter.Just call the man!
To: g'nad
you need to buy a used lawn tractor... that's just nonsensical...Yer tellin' me! It is on our wish-list. Of course, in order to make such purchases, we need a thing called money that comes from a thing called a job. I guess it can wait a bit longer! ;~D It's good exercise, anyway.

As long as the 'puters have a network connection it should work. Just set the proxy up on whichever 'puter has the cable modem, and change the DNS settings on the second 'puter to point to the proxy server.

Just thought of a problem, though... if one of us must be connected to the cable modem, how does that person connect to the router at the same time, so that the other computer can access it?
Oh yeah, I think I have an extra USB network adapter around. My computer is currently connected through a built in adapter on the motherboard.

Are your computers networked to each other currently? Or were they networked through the non-working router?
If they're not currently connected to each other, then it won't work... but you could get a cross-over cable to direct connect the computers, or a little mini-switch or hub.

Yeah, they were connected through the router.
The new router should be here sometime next week, so its probably not worth going to too much trouble to work around.

Sounds like when I was sharpening one of my knives, and some idiot slammed me in the back.
Knife spun a dizzying arc in the air and hit my hand and finally stuck point first in the floor.
Since I didn't feel any pain, I figured I was okay and retrieved the knife from the floor.
And then someone pointed to the drops on the floor.
Lesson one from that incident, never sharpen stuff to a razor edge.
