Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Not all sea stories are fun to hear... this one was about a coastie on my ship that was killed by falling across the 80ft wide bridge when the ship rolled over about 60degrees in the gulf of AK.
Crappy place to have ships. Waves bigger than most of the appalachians. Bad stuff happens there.

You're right, that's a bad story. But, a legitimate sea-story still.
As much as I hate being cold, I just can't imagine being in a place like that on the water.

Crap in a hat... just has a *$%##$% "Palmetto Bug" crawl across my bare foot...
It's dead now.

The Wizard? Dang... how'd you get an appointment? No appointment. He came to see her. Scratched marks all over her door and a lot of dwarves showed up too.

I've kilt one of those about every other night at Aunt Cheryl's. She said now that I've gone she thinks it's time to call the exterminator. Funny watchin' her when they appear. Prolly bout the same as watchin' me when I see a snake.

As much as I hate being cold, I just can't imagine being in a place like that on the water. There's stuff up there that even having seen it doesnt' help trying to imagine it. The Gulf of Alaska, at times, has waves that are of biblical proportions. Sometimes they just appear out of nowwhere for no good reason.
I had one crossing of the Gulf of AK in the Resolute... and for the whole crossing it was just like glass. The whole thing. Not a ripple. It was creepy, and everybody on board thought the same thing. It was like walking up the back of a giant sleeping snake.

We don't get them all *that* often... we haven't had rain in a while now though, so I think they come up the drains looking for water.
Hate the nasty things.
To: Overtaxed
Well, so far so good, that one is past us now, heading along 50. Sirens off now.
btw, Gypsy has decided it's more 'comfortable' yeah that's it, more 'comfortable' on the couch now with LSA.
G'nite all.
To: Ramius
Well, that sounds like it woulda been kinda cool lookin' if you could get over the creepy. Perfect for skiing.... if it wasn't cold enough to freeze you solid in 10 seconds!

They are nasty things. Surprised you don't have more of them. Austin is kinda famous for them but prolly only if you live closer to the river.
Shortly after I moved to Austin I was living in an old duplex down on Lake Austin Blvd. We had those things in swarms there! Hundreds daily. Was horrible. No amount of exterminating would make 'em go away.
Did I mention I was only at that place a few weeks?
