The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

LOL. That sounds like a neat trick, although I don't know if I'm cordinated enough to do it.

I use to have a pony that was horrible about that. I think some of his problem was because he was so small. We use to prop him up by the house when we shoed him so he wouldn't wear out the shoer. It worked pretty good, insted of leaning on the shoer he rested on the house.

Yeah, I like the long lung line better then lifting on in the trailer, and the ones that get in by themselves are the best. If my husbands horse gets near an opened trailer door she just gets in. It's so nice.

One of the old school horses would do that to me when I groomed her but she couldn't help it. She would fall asleep:')

We are going to a horse auction in Houston this weekend to check out trailers. I don't know if I will get a slant or stock but it will not be red.

My horse had decided he was not going back in his trailor on the way home. My husband and another man thought they would lock arms and try to lift him. Yeah right:')

Personally I like a straight load the best. I don't really know why, probably just to be diferent. We currently have a two horse straight load bumper pull that is set up like a stock trailer. It was my graduation present from mom and dad. It's perfect for us.

I have a red straight load. He hates it. I can walk him around all the other trailors and he is fine. Get near his and he starts balking. My fault that I haven't worked with him on it but I figured since I was going to sell it anyway I might as well wait.

Weird. I always heard that horses were color blind. Guess it's just one of those things he's trying you on. I'd tie him to it and leave him there for a while.

I didn't think horses saw in colors either but he knows this one. He did get curious about the tack room today. I had to jump in to get something and told him to stand. He did but he stuck his head in to look around. Go figure. Maybe I should load him in the other end :')

Maybe it smells funny to him. How big is it? My father in law has a horse that is use to being loaded in a big four horse slant trailer, and when we load him in our's we usually got to gut kick him to make him go.

It smells funny to me too. I'm fixing to get serious about this. I need to start short distances with him first though. Maybe next weedend I'll load him and take him to dairy Queen.
