Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
yes, it was most all her. We couldnt figure out why she had a stallion to begin with, but to get off of him everytime he did something she did not like was insane. Thats jsut asking him to attack

UUUMMMMMM....yes and no. This attitude is all fine and good when a horse is behaving. But what about when it's not. And I don't care how well trained one is, how much one "likes" working, or "likes you" horses will/can test you to see if you can really make them do something. It might even be something they like doing, they can/will test. You have to be ready with an immediate response, and it needs to be enough of a response that they know you mean business. I think it is a big mistake to treat horses like you would a dog. They are too big, and can do things quick that can hurt you. Yes, you need to care and respect them, but they need to respect you too as their master. Horses, even the best trained ones, even ones you've had for years, can/will take a mile when you give an inch.

What do you mean round penning? free lunging? lunging till they're tired? lunging on a lunge line?
Becky
That is definitely true. There is also no reason to have a stallion unless you are breeding. Otherwise it is just too much.
Forgive my ignorance, but do you sell hay for a living?
Yeah, that's the kind of bit I used to do it in. I had started with an O ring. But it was pulling thru. I think it fit fine, but you have to put quite a bit of pressure on them to pull them down.
Becky
Great. It's pouring down again:'(
Takes a little more preparation, but it's much easier on the horse and less strenuous than pulling them down by the bit.
We have a stallion. He's about the best thing we've had. When people come and want to ride, even if they know nothing, that is who I put them on. That is the horse my daughter runs barrels on. He's 15. She started riding him when she was 14. Just a great great horse. We've taken him on overnight trail rides and tied him to a post with mares all around. He does fine.
Stallions can be rode and used just like any other horse, they just have to be managed from the very beginning of their lives.

You know, now that you say that, I think we did run the rein on the off side thru the D ring on that side for leverage. I was pulling him down for sulling up, so he was saddled and bridled. The day we did it, I would be riding him, and as soon as he locked up I jumped off and pulled him down. I was in the arena the first day.
The next day he tried it out on the trial. I had to let him know he was going to get pulled down where ever he was at for that behavior. Only had to do it that one time on the trial. After that he never sulled again.

After the Hunter Pace we had hound races. The folks who puppy walked the particular hounds were cheering on their favorites. "Growler" won by a head, and his family went nuts. Most of the hounds are lemon and white, the one black-and-tan opted out of the hound race and came over to the crowd for pats and hugs (regardless of the swearing of the whippers-in!)
Do all hounds have that high sweet voice? Much higher in pitch and sweeter than beagles or coon hounds.
Well, they are not ALL bad, but it seems like a lot of them are a bit dangerous. Just hormones raging.
I think we need to try this method out on some of our local lawyers . . . . ;-)
(sorry - as a lawyer, I couldn't resist).
IMO:), they're dangerous because of idiots handling them.

Hahahaha LOLOL that's very true!!!!
LOL. I had a mental picture of you briddling your opponent and bringing him down in front of a jury:')
OH, Oh:)
