Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
How'd the clean up go? Did you get all the brush burned and the chainsaw cutting done?
Becky
Oh yeah - remember to call the vet ;~D
Sorry about trouble breathing... I hope it passes.
We got a LOT done.... The brush is in an enourmous pile in the pasture for later burning. I look forward now to going through and raking and seeding it now before the weather gets so cold that seed won't germinate. Since it's so shady I am going to plant some pasture mix and some clover seed.
You are concerned about this storm Cindy? I bet Inge Cav is too, in Alabama. Prayers for your safety down there in hurricane zone.
I've found that losing my temper (in my case getting frustrated) just makes things worse for me. I've witnessed the difference in making a horse doing something and beating one. :'(
Just a tad with this big weekend coming in but the track will more realisticlly turn his way (which he doesn't need either) than drifting west.
I had a horse one time, (I got where I hated that horse:), that started sulling up on me. Lock his legs, get real stiff and just not move, Wouldn't do anything. We spurred and whipped. Nothing would get him moving. He'd be fine one minute and then sull up the next.
I asked around about what to do, and a guy we know told us to pull him down. Lay him down on the ground and sit on his neck so he can't get up till we let him up. But it had to be done quick, as soon as he locked up. Horses feel real vulnerable on the ground. It actually worked like a charm. I had Charlie come help the first time, wasn't sure how easy it would be, actually it is very easy to do, It took 3 times one day, and once the next, (I think he was making sure we really meant it:). Never sulled again.

Yeah, because of the horn. I don't know much about jumping but I've been told it's next to impossible to avoid hitting the horn taking a big jump in a western saddle. Don't know if that's true, don't want to find out:).
Becky
How did jumping western come up? I missed that. Yeah, you'll either hit the horn, or sit so far behind the motion that you are a hinderance to the horse.
Me either, but good stuff to know about in an ER :')

Something from Maxwells post
Interesting.... just like the Horse Whisperer. I'd like, I think, to try that with my pony. She really is afraid (and yes, that fear makes her disobedient). I'd like to lay her down where she really is vulnerable and say "See... I am really not trying to kill you. I could, but I wont".
I have to go now but how in the world do you get a horse down. I can drop a 6 ft big guy in a heartbeat but I haven't come across anything about that in my books. I don't think a #8 (my favorite) would work with a horse :')
What is she afraid of?
The guy that told me to do it, also said not to make laying there real "pleasant" for them. I didn't go that far:). I did not pat and reassure the horse while he was down, I just held him down with my knee placed real firmly on his neck. He needed to know I was in control. Since we saw great improvement after just the first time, I did NOT resort to poking dirt in their ears, and eyes, and thumping on them while they were down. LOL....and I get people who think I"M to hard on them:) The last time I did it or that it needed to be done I was out on the trails by myself. I wondered if he was smart enough to think out here by herself she may not be able to get it done, He actually put up a bigger fight that time then any other. I dropped him on very rough ground, rocks and stickers. I think I would still be out there with him, if I hadn't done that. That horse had a major attitude streak, pure D stubborn
He was a beautiful paint horse, and had been broke by a girl who intended on using him western pleasure. He was 4 when I got him, and hadn't had alot of riding, altho trained well. But she never did much more then work him 20-30 minutes.
He did great when I rode him for the first 20-30 minutes then started the sulling up stuff. I don't think he liked 2-3 hour. He thought he needed to be done:)
We got him over the sulling, but he tried so many other things....I got so tired of fighting that horse, he's the one I traded Rusty for.

You put a bit in their mouth that won't pull thru, then stand on one side, reach over their neck for the rein on the oppisite side you are standing and pull their head around with it. It just tips them over. They will land with their back towards you.
Becky
She has a tendency to shy or leap away at my first attempt to do anything with her... spraying with the hose, fly spray, brushes, anything.. She's gotten better, but she was so 'shy' when we got her that it was a real problem. If you scared her, she'd blow to the point where you couldn't hold her. She's small, but she's still 700 pounds heavier than me. She's also gotten better because I approach her differently than I would another horse. If you just walk up to her and 'begin brushing' like you would another horse, she'll shy away and try to see what weapon you are trying to inflict on her. If I come up and just lay my hand on her neck (not petting, just quietly lay my hand there) she's fine and I begin brushing. But if you don't do that, she'll jump around until you do. Then she stops. Same thing working on the lunge, or under saddle the last time she was ridden. If you are pushing her to do something she is nervous about, she starts getting this wide bug-eyed look that shows she is building up tension that will eventually blow. If you can just get to her to lay your hand on her neck she'll finally breath down and relax. I don't know the source of it, I suspect she was beaten severely in her youth, but part of it is that she is just wired really tight.
I've always thought horses that were broke with rough treatment never makes a good minded horse. She'll probably always be that way now.
There was a guy in our round up club that "cowboy" broke his horses. Alot of people wanted him throwed out of the club. And altho I didn't agree with that, I didn't really consider it abuse, I always said his horses would be crazies, but he enjoyed that type of horse. I felt sorry for the horses, but unless it's really abuse you can't do anything about it.
He'd bring young horses down to the arena when a playday was going on. After the playdays, with a whole audience of people he'd drag the horse into a bucking shoot, get on and buck them out:(. He liked the audience. The part that I didn't like was, after playday alot of kids liked riding in the arena for awhile, well they were either in there with a crazy horse, or had to clear out, which wasn't fair to them. If that is how he wanted to break his horses, he needed to do it when no one else was there wanting to use the arena. But that's another story:)
Becky
that is gorgeous! Where is that at?
Wow, it looks like that sink has water in it. I have never seen a cat lay in water.
