The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, we executed the serial killer hen. She was trying to kill some more babies. I had a hen with 3 chicks in a crate and I turned them out today, and she immediately went after them. Mack wrung her neck. I was going to shoot her, but he offered so I took him up on it.

It was a wise decision. Sometimes that's just the way it is. Did she ever kill her own chicks? I can't remember from the original conversation...

She never had her own, and I know she is not laying eggs now, not sure she ever did.

Humph...

Good only for soup.

;-)

One of our new Americaunas started laying this week...we've got three greenish blue eggs from her already. Got five eggs just today! Now if the other Americauna will only start laying, we'll have a half a dozen eggs comin' in!

She's squattin' in a big way and checking out the nest boxes frequently...it'll be any day.

I saw Hairs posts about the legs. Maybe that's why but my vet "high" but He came out twice, did a physical, drew blood, gave him an injection, checked his feet, watched him walk and sold me wormer, iron, and eyedops for under 300.

Anyway the hold up is they want him vet checked,Kim has one more little jumping test she does before she will say he is a "kid" jumping horse.
No green jumping horse should be a kids jumping horse. That is stupid. I'll be surprised if he goes over the jump without reins. And who's going to teach him to find his distance? To jump properly? He needs to know all those things before he can be considered to be "kid safe"

That's a really cool pic. I wish that I was a guy so I could get out there and joust!!! :-)
I'm a wandering minstral at our Ren. Faire. Actually, there's someone who goes to my school that does the same faire every year. (She's the one that has the paint that I was talking about) Didn't know that she had horses until last night.

Tonight in the barn a couple of people saw the wormer I had. One was going to find me some kind of apparatus to administer it. The 2nd couldn't believe that we were going to do ourself instead of a vet and in the barn. I explained the owner had showed me how to give it to Okie. I was asked, "he takes it? " I told them "takes it? Okie eats everything. He likes it and would be happy with seconds" All watched us dose Sarah Lee. She bobbed her head some and put up a token fuss. She tried to spit but we just raised her head and held her mouth together like I do when I give Cindy her heartworm med. It felt good not to feel like the boarder DA tonight:')

Now why on earth would you get a vet to do it? Or were they being sarcastic. (Curse them if they were) :-)

No they were serious. I guess they thought she would put up a big fight in the barn.

No why on earth would she do that? I've always wormed in the barn and on crossties. They do the head bobbing and face making, but I've never had one go bananas on me. I've had them go bananas when the floaters come. But... I think I would do the same thing if I was a horse!

We don't do cross ties. I just clip them to a pole.
