The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Zulu was my little one, a 20 pound cocker mix, so she was a good size. My labrador was a lover, but was so clumsy he rarely worked except for with some of the old guys that missed their huntin' dogs.

This is the kitty I used to take to the nursing homes... really mellow cat. He was just put down today, after a long wasting period of Cancer. He was really really old, but my dad tried everything to pull him through.

You had to put your cat down today? I'm sorry.

Mineral blocks. No I don't use blocks anymore. That's whats so funny about the whole thing. Rusty will eat dirt but won't touch blocks. They just sit there and melt in the rain over time. Rocky on the other hand if given a block will just stand there 24/7 and lick it other then when he is drinking because of being thirsty form licking. Then of course he pee's constantly, so much that his whole run smells horrible. I know one summer he was drinking 40-50 gallons of water a day to conteract his licking the salt block. He does it from boredom. I didn't have much pasture then and he stayed in his run alot. Might work now that he gets out more.

But I talked to the vets about both of them and he said try the loose powdered mineral in their feed. It's made by Purina, 12-12-12 Minerals. Of course when I put it on their feed dry they won't lick it out of the buckets. I also give them a handful of whole corn mixed in their pellets to help their teeth. So NOW I mist a bit of water over the corn because they both love the corn and sprinkle the powder on the corn. So I know they're getting some.

That has been the thing the vet recommended we do for Rusty's anadrosis. He thinks he may have some kind of imbalance. He has gotten better but not come back all the way. When I go to get his coggins this year I am going to get the vet to run blood work. I'm tired of the guess work and want to know for sure if there is something I could be doing that will make him better.

You all have a happy Mother's Day.

My kids are taking me out to eat after church. When we get back Mack will post those pictures, and I'll watch so I can do it myself from now on.

The kitty was my dad's kitty now.... when I moved down here, dad said the cat was too old to move. Truth is, he liked the kitty too much. He's been really sick. I could tell he was shutting down. He was in his upper teens, which is about all a cat can hope to achieve.

Animals are so wonderful with stuff like that. I have seen people that never react with anyone hold a pet and start petting them.

Hey malakhi, didn't we e-mail you a picture of Jenny (signed up here as Superdoot), running barrels on the buckskin? That is before we had the ability to save our own pictures. Could you post that one for me if you still have it. Thanks.

Hi Becky. I think I still have that one on my computer at the office. I'll try to find it and post it tomorrow.

I just came in from a short ride, I can tell how long it has been since I rode two days in a row from the way my knees felt as soon as I got on!
