The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Sara-Lee reminds me of a cupcake. :-p Great. Now I have the jingle "Nobody does is like Sara Lee" running around in my head. :-)

I told him that when he came up with it! lol. He said to tell you "she is a cup cake" Better than some of the names he's been using around Okie when they have to follow her I guess:')

I wonder if that's a generic of what I have in stock.

I know that at my hunter barn, the mare that we bred was always relieved to be ridden away from baby for a while. She was a tough mom, and wasn't afraid to knock her babies about if they misbehaved.

Well we have three really little ones. One mare raising hers and an orphan. She stays busy but herds them back really good. The other mare lets her little darlin run and go where he pleases.:')

Nah. She's laid back but she's no nag. She's deeper and wiser than a cupcake:')

Are the babies allowed to run loose on the property, or do you have to ride through the mares' field? I'm just wondering why they always come thundering up to you. :-)

They have their own pasture or are stalled. They are let out on the grounds from 10-3 to graze.

I'm in their space during their time so I can't complain but today it was like a daycare center:') I have plenty of other places I can go if I want. The mare just has to get used to things. The grown and half grown ones stay back except for old Buttercup who stands in the middle of the road (private) and does not move for man or machine:') I really like that old lady.

Seriously Beaker, she has a kind of a sad, beaten down look in her eye. Cindy had the same look when I got her. Kind of a dullness. I see her starting to perk up but it makes you wonder what her life has been like.

I've seen it, especially among some of the school horses. If she was a dude horse, it was probably a lot of drudgery having inexperienced people haul her about, and she must have been used a lot. That would take the spark out of any horse. She's probably enjoying the light work, and I'm sure that you'll be a great mom to her.
I'm sorry if I offended you about the joke that I made about her being wiser than a cupcake. I'm sure that she's a bright horse. Paints are.

Oh dear - that sweet face - poor thing. Not particularly swollen though, it looks like it is healing nicely.

How is your daughter doing about it?

I think abcesses are about the worst kind of pain. There is no comfort from it until it breaks.

Thanks for the tips on the book. I think we should have one of those!

"I see her starting to perk up but it makes you wonder what her life has been like."

"I've seen it, especially among some of the school horses"

Their spirit was beaten out of them, in a manner of speaking. They have nothing to look forward too. Horses have a natural playful disposition.

I wasn't offended lol. Yeah the owner says she probably thinks she's in Heaven. All she has to do is get in a trailer and go for a ride, lunge a little and ride one time a day 4-5 days a week.
