The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

This was long long time ago. But I think I remember the reason they did walk her some each day was to keep the leg holding all her weight excersiced. Does that make sense? I'm having trouble remembering the details. She did get over it finally, but then she would have lameness in the other leg if worked to much. Ring bone is a degenerative bone dieseis. It just slowly got worse over some years. The owner tried to sell her to me, trying to get out of when it was time to call it for her. She was still a bit rideable at the time, but I didn't want to have to make the call either. And now that I think about it she was he that had been gelded, so he would be no good for breeding either. I'm not sure how long they kept him.

This is post-op of Tubby. She seems to be doing pretty well. By watching her, you can tell that it's going to take some time for her. She is on pain, and inflammation meds, and antibotics. The stitches will come out next week. The vet stitched her eye lid shut first, before he cut around the eye socket, to remove the eye. As long as she is eating, drinking, and doesn't get an infection, she should be fine.

Yeah, I have my hands full right now. If she wanted a "foal" and would teach me and it wouldn't interfere with my riding (which sounds like it would)I didn't care but I don't want to get into raising, right now anyway.

No surprise probably but I'm more leaning towards rehabilitation when I get my own place and more experience under my belt. That's why I was wondering about the injured legs and treatment options. I would think it would be so exciting to see lame horses recover and be able to run again:')

I'm glad she seems to be doing OK. It's sad, but she will adjust.

I know you are sad but you are keeping her comfortable and treating preventatively for infection. Nothing more you can do. Accidents happen. The blind in one eye school horses at my stables are happy and doing just fine. She probably will be too.

I rode my mare up till 30 days before her due date. It's afterwards that it's difficult. I was riding Belle in the arena after 30 days, so that was a total of 60 days off. But when I started back on her it was just in the arena where the baby could follow along. Then at about 2 months I started leaving baby in the pen next to the arena. As long as she could see mom she was OK. Mom didn't seem to care one way or the other. At 3 months, when baby wasn't paying attention when mom was in the arena, I started going out the driveway out of sight for just a few minutes at a time,. and slowly increased the time she couldn't see mom. Seemed to work fine. I think it was at 3 months too, I ponied the baby for short periods in the arena.

The baby was handled every day. We did something too her everyday. She was halter broke by the time she was 4-5 days old. We sprayed her with water from a bottle, like fly spray would be, we picked up her feet, cleaned them, hammered on them gently, just anything we could think of to bomb proof her. Flapped bags at her, put ropes around her legs, just whatever. The horse is 4 now, and bomb proof I'd say. Blake rides her on trails just fine.

Oh, and she was put in the trailer with mom at about a week:) She had to have a bit of help with the step up, but went in like a champ and has ever since.

That's the way I think it should be done too. To me it would be like not having anything to do with a baby and then expecting him to bond with you when he is two.

Thanks.

"How to be your own veterinarian, sometimes" is a great book. We always kept a copy in our camper, when trail riding. It came in really handy once, when camping and riding at Hocking Hills. It was a really hot and humid day. A young lady came back from a ride, and her horse was over heated. He had this thumping sound, coming from his sides as he breathed. I had never heard of "thumps' before. We were able to find out his problem from the book, and what to do.

Okie did so good yesterday. He still drenched when he came out though. He gets himself so worked up about trailers. You see the picture of him looking at the mare? He looks so confused:'( I wish I had had this trailer. I think I contributed to his problem by putting him in that straight for so long.

Exactly. If you ever do breed a mare, which in reality I don't recommend, read some books on imprint training. Some of that stuff I think they go a little far out on, but it does make breaking one easier.

I don't recommed it mainly because of the expense. You've got a horse here that you can't really do alot with for 4 years. Yeah you can start riding at 2, but not much, you'll hurt their legs. So you have alot of time and expense, becasue they eat as much as an adult horse because they are growing so fast, but you can't ride them. Now if you enjoy the ground work more then riding, I guess it would be a good thing. I just want to ride:)The ground work, to me, is not as fun, altho it is fun to watch one progress.

And when breeding you very seldom get what you want, wrong sex, wrong color, wrong size. It never comes out like what you want. You can go buy one and get closer to what you want then breeding for one. IMO:)

He'll get use to it:) Really. And that is a good trailer for him to do it in.

I used to wonder why the babies went so cheap:') Someday I might like to see how it's done but not now. I think they are cute and all but at this time they are more of a pain in the butt to me than anything else. Maybe like kids, if one was mine I would feel different, huh?:')

JMO, but if you are going to raise one, breed for it. By the time you buy a weanling it's too late to imprint train.

You can do it to some degress if you get them right at weaning time because they want to bond with something, but it's better to be there the minute they hit the ground. That's why I slept in the barn when waiting for Dot and why I will sleep in the barn next spring if Belle is in foal.

I think that the book that you're thinking of is "The Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook" Yellow hardcover with a red jacket? It's my horse bible. :-)

Furazone is an excellent all around antibiotic treatment for cuts and scrapes and rubs. I used it all the time. There's also Fura-septin out there too, but I don't know the difference. I've only heard of it.
