Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Wow. I've seen tendon injuries, but never saw them treated by pin-firing. Wierd.
They do work really well at pulling a lot of hair off, I just don't think there is even an end to it! I prefer the hose when they are shedding bad! They may not stop shedding, but at least it's clean hair coming off on all the tack.
That looks very painful. Wouldn't heat and vasodilator creams work?
What bothers me is the brush rusts. I can't seem to stop it. All are like that around here.
I think it was a pretty early treatment and isn't done so much now. Now, there are better drugs now, and perhaps, an unwillingness to cause so much more pain in the effort to cure it fast.
Okie done shedding. Miss what's her name very short haired but I guess still to hot for down here.
I think it's in the same category as treating with leeches.
Does the new horse have a name?
Bay is shedding out his summer coat in prep for the winter coat now.
What happens when they can't bear wt on one leg?.Do they just stand or are they able to hobble on 3?
They'll endure a lot of pain to limp... they can't very well hop on three.
Oh ok. Maybe that's what she was doing. I didn't know they shedded the summer. I just thought more hair grew in.
The winter hair pushes the summer hair out. twice a year they do the shed thing. I blanket mine in winter, so they don't grow the really long winter coat.
I figured. They are so big. I couldn't see one compensating like a smaller animal would. I figured they would probably just stand or go down.
They do when it's bad. Horses try so hard to mask pain that if you can see it, it's bad. The worst pain I have ever seen was a horse unwilling to put her front foot down from an abcess in her foot. And I actually had to talk the owner into paying the vet to come out. She wanted to trailer the horse in to save the $25 farm call. I said "That horse is in so much pain she is standing on three legs, how do you expect her to balance in a trailer?"
~sigh~
Oh and she lifted her front feet for picking today and starting to follow leg cues more:')
How sad. Did the horse recover? What's good for pain? I thought I read ASA somewhere here but how much? I guess I need to add a vet book to my collection. All I have just say call the vet.
I saw a horse documentary once where a horse had hurt his leg and the vet had him in some kind of lift to keep him up.
Sure, she recovered... it's the same horse that ecurbh rode in that river shot. Like any abcess, the pain goes away instantly with the release of the pressure. An abcess inside the foot builds up a lot of pressure with nowhere for it to go. The vet poked a hole in it and let it drain. Probably some antibiotics and she was good to go.
Bute (Phenalbutazone) is a good anti-inflammatory, minor pain killer that you could have on hand. Mash it up and give it orally as a paste in with a syringe, I add molasses and warm water to make it a little more bearable. They hate it. But you can use it to treat a minor swelling or soreness if you have an injury.
There is a good horseman's medical book I've seen, wish I had it, I'd tell you the exact title. When to call the vet is a tough call, I am prone to call early, but I have gotten better with experience. The first time you have a particular thing happen, you learn a lot from calling the vet out, and can perhaps handle it yourself the second time. But then, I have that long-standing crush on my vet, so I don't hesitate to call if there's any question ;~D
Glad Eddie had a good ride! You were riding in a field with other horses? I ride with my bad pony loose with us I guess, but they know each other.... and Bay doesn't flinch when she runs around us.
