Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
OK - My friend's is a bigger one, and the front compartment is the smaller one. She can fit two in front and three in back, in a pinch. Whichever - that mare will fit either place ;~D
Tomorrow no games. We are going to do it just like this guy showed us. I would prefer he didn't but if he has to get stressed to get it done he gets stressed. Once he realizes it's easier to just do it than fight it he falls in line. I'm going to get Eddie to look over these suggestions so we can limit errors tomorrow if yall don't mind. We have to make him slant or put a bar up. She shouldn't have to put up with him in her lap:')
The front looks longer because of the round front, the horses head goes there but his front legs/feet don't.
The back compartment has the same amount of floor space for their legs, they are designed for the horses in the back to put their heads over the divider. It wont' hurt them to be bumping the horse in the front. Really:)
Becky
This one is 14 feet.
The back looks smaller but as Becky says the round part could be an optical. Okie must go in the front for his safety right now I think.
It's exactly like the one we had.
What is the reason you won't put her in the back? May I ask:)
It would make an easier load to haul too. More balanced.
Becky
???? Why not the divider?
Don't worry about worrying us, we'd love to help. Trial and error is just tough on both of you and I wish you had helpful experienced hands helping you there.
I'll only say one more thing, then what ever you do is fine with me:)
Put one in the front and one in the back. They will fit. It will be safer for horses and for you. Ignore the other stuff we've told you, but this one suggestion you really ought to consider seriously.
Becky
Agreed!
I embarressed to post this. I was looking at her length and the space and didn't think she would fit caz I was eyeing her from nose to tail and not from front to back feet:')
Don't be embarrassed. That is a typical mistake.
Becky
Tomorrow we were planning on taking them to Dairy Queen:')
Okay, one more thing:)
When you load the mare, the first time lead her up to the edge throw the rope over her back and kiss to her and pat her butt. She may just go in without you having to go in with her. That is how I loaded my horses in that trailer. The shut the door and go to the side and reach in and get the rope and tie her, or un clip it if you don't want to tie.
It may take a time or two to get her to go in without you at her head. But I bet she'll do it, especially since Okie will be in the front.
Becky
Funny post. I like to walk my horse where we are going first. I walked the mare. I asked Eddie to walk Okie behind her. He's fussing to the horse like you know how to do this , why is she making us follow a,.. girl. We come thru a big mud puddle about 6-12 inches. I just walked her thru. Then "yalls" turn. Okie started walking around it. I told Eddie don't let him do that. He told me, he told him to because he didn't want to get his shoes wet and dirty. I sighed and took Okie and walked him thru. City slicker:')
Got to go. Eddie wants to go try this....now:')
The vet came out, and we had a choice of hauling her to Ohio State (cheaper, but a 3 hour drive one way), or having him do it. We decided to have him perform the operation, then and now. I thought about taking some pictures, but it was not very pleasant. She should do fine now with only one eye.
I was out in the back, brush hogging, and didn't see what happened. My daughter told me that she had my grandaughter (5 years old) on the pony in the back yard, and the pony went into the barn, and her stall, with the child.
I wanted so bad to lecture my daughter, about not holding onto the pony while the kid was on her. Knowing my daughter, she probably got scared and mad, and jerked the pony around in the stall and she hit her eye. She feels so bad now, that I didn't say anything about it.
That pony is the sweetest thing, and I really feel terrible. Thanks for listening.
LOL. I've had alot of horses who sidestepped puddles. I'd go back and get in wars with them to get them to step in. I finally thought about it, hell, I wouldn't walk in that think if I had a choice. Now, as long as I know they will go in if I ask them too, I let them go around.
Becky
I'm so sorry.
I've known of several horses who lost an eye and did fine. She might hold her head a bit cocked to compensate for not seeing to one side, but other then that, she'll be fine.
Becky
Oh dear. Yes, I have seen horses that did just fine with only one eye.
You know.... We wouldn't mind seeing pictures of something like this. It's all good knowledge to have seen it before, so we know what to expect.
I feel so bad for your pony and your daughter.
That's right. Horses will cross a river, but walk around a puddle.
