The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, it can be a hassle sometimes. The Empress Mother tends to call me around midnight. :)

Jenny's running Rocky. She has to get him use to an indoor pen as that is what will be at the fair.

Don't forget the camera!

My horse was a water roller. Ruined a really good piece of tack that way. We were crossing a stream and all of a sudden he started pawing, and splashing and before I could get him to go forward, DOWN he went.

I tried today at 9:05 but the line was busy, when I thought of it again it was their lunch time, and now they are closed:(, and I won't be here tomorrow or Thursday. So now I need to try to remember next Mon.

My mare did that to me three times. She never gave me any warning either, just be walking thru water and down she went. Twice in the creek and once in a big puddle. The first time she did it I had only had my brand new custom made saddle for about a month:(.

LOL, I was just remembering those times she did that. The time she did it in the puddle I was riding with another girl. As the horse went down she started hollering get off, get off. So I swung my leg to get off and the mare stood back up and I landed on my butt in the puddle:), The other times she went down, she only got part way in, and I think she felt the stirrup mashing into her side and she stood back up and I just came up with her. If I had just stayed on in the puddle incident it probably would have been the same thing and I wouldn't have been sitting in a puddle:)

HMM. Maybe the first time I do this it will be the same as riding on a cliff. (I'll get my butt off and walk the horse across first to see how they do :')

My water-roller was my mustang ... I had gotten off of him in a lake and was just standing with my back to him about belly deep talking to my friend. Felt a funny kind of tug and splash and my friend gasped and I turned around to see nothing but feet - Head and body completely under water! When he got up, he seemed a little surprised by that, sputtering.... He was the only horse I ever found deep enough water to swim in. We went to that lake a lot, he liked to swim, and it was a blast!

Well it's something my mare didn't do except those three times. She had been in that creek lots before she did it. Just cause they don't do it one time doesn't mean they won't do it the next.

I always take my feet out of the stirrups now when riding a horse thru water, just in case. If they go down and roll to their side I don't want my foot locked in a stirrup. I also make sure there is no slack in the reins so I can start pulling up if they feel like their going down. If you watch the way a horse lays down, their head and neck actually come up as they bend their front legs under themselves. But they can really do it fast:) If their putting their head down to drink you really want to let them do that, because you think their picking their spot.

I rode Okie thru the creek a bunch, he never acted like he was going to lay down.

At the ranch Jenny and I worked at riding horses, they had one pond deep enough to take horses swimming in. We did it a few times in the summer.

LOL, I just got done rereading and realized I left part out. I don't type as fast as I think. It is suppose to say. If the horse wants to put it's head down to drink you need to let it but that can be scary because you think they're picking their spot to roll:) Becky

Okie funny yesterday. As soon as our back turned he untied himself from the trailer and went to eat grass. Today he goes in or he doesn't get the feed.

My last riding horse tried to water roll several times while we were crossing streams. Somehow I managed to stop her before she went down each time. It became something to watch out for while trail riding.
