The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well when I explained not really about the dogs and cats he thought that was silly and went back to eating his candy. A few minutes later he was saying "it's raining gum balls" :')

But get that across to horse owners and I'll send you a cigar:) And of course what I mean by regular is not once a month.

Now I feel guilty:'). I'm so lazy. I just got up from a nap and too late today. You know things usually work out for the best but I wish sometimes I had got my land first. It's such a pain leaving my nice comfy house to go to the stables. Once there I'm fine. Just getting there...

You've got that right about horses...not just once a month and not just leaving them with a show trainer. I've had two really nice horses that were supposed to be being trained by the best....til I found out they both were afraid of riding spirited, large horses. One so-and-so actually drugged my mare before he worked her. We do all the training ourselves after that little episode. The other gelding was ridden, as best we can tell, twice in four months. I won't spend a dime on trainers ever again. I don't have a great deal of free time with my job, but the horses are here so they come first...now the housecleaning? well that's a different story. I tell people if they are coming to see my house, they need to get new friends. HA ha

I agree, I just won't buy/keep a horse if I can't handle it. I'm not wasting money on a trainer. They're all full of BS, especially the John Lyones, and Pat Parelli's.

You know that snake in my driveway. It is a rattle snake. Tami came and got Trash and we looked close at it and you can see rattles on the end of it's tail. They're very, very tiny, but they're there.

Yeah, I turned down a trainer too. Shocked some people. The horse fine. I'm the one that needs a trainer. All lessons taught me was how to ride on a school horse. I found a place that will have a trainer watch me ride and correct/suggest as needed on my own horse. What good does it do to pay to train your horse if the rider doesn't know what you are training him to do? I was told I couldn't even be around. Forget that. I took my money elsewhere.

You see the thread about plans to sling shot the horses and throw marbles under their feet? Crazy people. I don't even like to ride my horse around srangers on foot or in cars. Most people good and slow down but I've had people zoom by even at the stables. Last year at a parade we have every year a few people were taunting horses and one even helping his kid shoot silly string!

Eeeek. I lived in rattlesnake country in college.... But I am pretty unaccustomed to poisonous things here...

Funny thing is the night before that snake turned up in my driveway, Tami brought Trash home, and I was walking up and down the drive with her barefoot. Might not do that anymore:)

Well I goofed on the trailer. It was getting dark. It's not a slant but a wide stock trailer. Those weren't slant bars but divider doors. It will work though. It's open and wide. It was a good price and I had already agreed to buy it so I did. I don't think the guy knew what I meant when I had asked if it was a slant. He told me yesterday that I could put my horse in that way but he only had one and loaded her straight.

Could she have picked it up and brought it in? Something tore him up.

I don't think so. He wasn't very flattened out. And when I first saw him out there he was curled up like snakes do in the strike postition. I'd say the dogs or cat got him.

I know most aren't NYers. I didn't mean to imply that. I've been to a few freeps and you see some of the same people. I think it's their job. Who pays them is my question?

I went to one in Austin when our senators got cute. The protesters I met got there own selves there. The supporters were mostly bussed in from the Dallas area.

Stock trailers work just fine! When we go to buy, we may go that way because they are lighter, and they are cheaper. They are a little shorter than horse trailers in head room. Bay is so tall I put a padded trailering helmet on him in my friend's stock trailer. If you are just carrying one, he can be loose... Perhaps in the front compartment. Two can be carried loose also with the divider between them. I prefer to leave them loose if possible like that. I have found that given a choice, Bay prefers to ride backwards. Whatever is most comfortable is easiest!

Feeling great and riding every day. My rocky is really coming along. I took him for a trail ride today and he didn't spook at anything. Can't wait for fall to see some of the beautiful leaves along the trail. How is your horse doing?

This is a much lower trailer. Eddie had to put a low tow bar on the truck. A little rust but not bad. It will work ok for what we need. Of course we would have liked to have had a horse RV but who wouldn't? We still need to put padding down before I take him to Austin but he's ready to go. I just have to work to get him in. If I have problems though it is nobody fault but my own for waiting so long but it wasn't that I didn't want to work him with the old trailer. I just hated making him go in a dark , dark, tight box. I want him to like riding, not fear it. After, he gets in good his first ride will be to the Circle K down the street :')
