The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I know... I don't think it's time for that... I think if he's fine now, he can go on.... if his eye gets worse, then that might be the better choice if that is next year or a few years from now.

My dad just spent a bunch of money (thousands) on surgery to save his old kitty, and it didn't work. I'm kinda in the middle of the road on this... He's worth spending some money on, just maybe not this, not now.

Hope you go and get a chance to see Harley too at least!

What class is Heather riding in?

I think she does cross country.

I have in mind before a situation arises what I will spend on any animal to keep it alive, and what the guarantees are that it will work. That way I don't get caught up in an emotional decision in the heat of a moment. I found when Rusty coliced it was easy to say this is what I'm willing to do, this is what I'm not, because the decision had actually been made before the emergency arose.

Like Rusty's colic. I was not going to spend the amount that surgery would have cost. Even for 100% guarantee it would work. I'd spend up to $400 on him on an iffy outcome, and maybe $1000 on a for sure outcome.

Susie $300 on a for sure outcome, right now because she is young and such a good companion.

I think I'm probably alot cheaper then others in this area:). Not willing to spend great amounts on vetting animals. There are just too many of them out there to replace with rather then go in debt for a sick one. They are after all animals, and have no fear of death. They don't know whats going to happen when you take them. I think they fear pain more when they are in pain.

If your sure the cat is not in pain then I'd probably him alone till you suspect he is. Maybe get another one now too, so that when he goes it won't be so hard.

Yeah - I've probably done the same mental math on mine... There are so many expensive options out there that you kindof have to. The amount I can spend or will spend also varies with how hard the money is to come by. Right now... we just don't have thousands.

So I wouldn't have done colic surgery on Bay either... and unless our fortunes dramatically change, I wouldn't pay a thousand to cut his nerves if/when his Navicular proceeds to that level. It is just SO expensive... And often the horse is not sound to ride afterwards with numb feet anyway. Some are, some aren't. It's 50-50

People with more money to spend, where everything else would not suffer for it, can afford a different outlook.

Exactly.

And even then some of that stuff is just way to out there.

Hey, do you by any chance know what age a filly is when she first starts coming into season and can get pregnant?

Well, the accidental pregnant mare that was given to my friend Tiffney is just now two with a new baby at her side. She must have gotten pregnant at just a year old.

Mama is small, thin, and really should still be growing herself. This baby is taking all her growth out of her.

So I think the answer is, like people, they are able to get pregnant much younger than they really should.

But you need to know how sensitive your horse is in that area before you try your excerise, JMO.
It's a very valid and correct opinion. :-) I was silly for not including that part. The horse that I'm working with is a very well trained school horse. Not sure how sensitive Okie is.

What would the foal be like if a stallion bred his daughter?

And BTW, this has nothing to do with Rocky and Dot:)

That is called line breeding.... and while it has been used to emphasize a particular trait in the creation or modification of a breed where there were not many animals to choose from in the gene pool, it's also likely to emphasize any otherwise recessive weaknesses that would not have come about with the inclusion of new genes in the mix.

Line breeding created some benefits, it also, in people, created hemophelia.

OK - What ~does~ this have to do with? :~D

Goodness no. You were right! I was worried that I seemed preachy on that first post, actually.

CS has a stud running with his 1 1/2 year old daughters. When she told me that it worried me, and we talked about it this past weekend on our ride. Neither one of us was for sure what age it could be a problem at. I thought I remembered you saying you knew someone that had a 2yr old that already had a baby, so must have gotten pregnant at 1 year.

Not at all. It sounds like a good excerise.

I worry alot about my posting, I have absolutly no tact, an stuff comes out alot of times and I don't even realize how it sounds. The funny thing is after I post something then go back and read it 5 minutes later the tactlessness in it shows up like a sore thumb. Why can't I see it at the time I post it:)

Oh I should add that CS thought she would be totally safe till the fillies were 2. She planned on seperating them in the early spring.

LOL...see now I'm worrying about this post. I meant, that sometime when I'm posting my opinion it comes out on the harsh side. Not that I'm saying anything that needed to be said with tact, just voice my opinions to strongly.

I think I'll shut up now:)

Oh - yeah..... I think it's long past time they should have been seperated. I think the situation that happened with the mare my friend ended up with, they had a bunch of yearlings running together.... colts and fillies.

The inbreeding element is only half the concern I would have for the future of those fillies. The one my friend has already been so stunted by it. She's barely able to hold weight, let alone continue to mature herself.

Here is the two-year old momma... the kid standing next to her is about 9... and that is a 4-foot gate sitting on the ground there. She's a QH... but she's not much bigger than a pony, and has a really narrow and underdeveloped frame.

Do you think on a good feeding program, the momma would be able to go ahead and fill out to the potential she would have if she hadn't had a baby?
