Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Fascinating.... I can't explain that unless they've stuck rank begineers on horses as some side-show thing.
Breaking a few minutes then I have to get back to housework.
Well he ate it. He popped his head up a couple of times like what is this and finished by licking the bucket. I gave him 30 cc. I'll gradually up it to 120cc. I'm cheating though. The ViSorbin a syrup and sweet. It may not be as easy in a few weeks.
His feet look good to me. The ferrier filed off a lot of the worn area on the side. It looks like he used a lot more nails too and I'm not sure but some may be a little higher. Okie doesn't seem to be having any problems with them.
Back from bunko, I won the prize for most bunkos. Feet stuff:{ I'm just not into painted toes...LOL but I must admit those toe seperaters feel funny. Oh well, there was some good food. Spinach/artichoke dip...uuuummmmmm.

I have only had a pedicure done once, a few months ago. It was ok, til she started massaging my leg and then it was "hey, hey, what are you doing, well that's ok. Just stick with the feet" :')
LOL...I don't like touching my own feet let alone someone else doing it:) I have a thing about toes yuk. After about age 2 toes get ugly.

It quit raining, Got the horses in the yard mowing...
Yard's a jungle, all this rain.... I picked the lawnmower up from the shop, as soon as it dries out, I'll be busy!
I don't think any adult has pretty feet, and I hate summer when everyone's running around with their toes showing. Especially men.
Anyway, looks like the day turned real nice there. I love your trees.
Becky
Funny. None of us really want our feet messed with but feet probably our number one priority here:')
You yard looks nice. The kids already mowing:')
My shoers coming tomorrow morning to shoe Rusty. He goes to work seriously starting for sure Mon. maybe Sat. I think the horse show doesn't start till afternoon. Hopefully in a month I'll have him back up to at least a couple of hours on trails, and back to working on barrels.
Becky
Well, it's green again, and it needs mowed....
Becky, I love the trees too, keeps it very shady here when it's hot!
He's tanned, he's rested, he's ready!
I hope he does real well!
~crossing fingers~ If he'll just sweat:)
Becky
He's getting squeaky? ;o)
(Just kidding ... I saw the discussion over the previous day. :o)
~crossing my fingers also~
Good night.... early to bed tonight...
:')
Thanks, this is definitely a thread up my alley. I am in fact going to be a large animal vet and plan on specializing in equine medicine and going back for a board certification after I've been in practice a few years. I like working with sheep and goats as well, and while cattle and small animals are nice, they aren't where I want to spend all my time.
I've got a 1989 16h bay Thoroughbred whom I've had for nearly 10 years. Managed to save enough to get him when I was 15 and while I'd not advocate running out and getting a 6 yr old barely-trained TB most of the time, he's always had a level-headed, eager to learn disposition. The real key is that I had a good trainer to help out and I'd had regular lessons for 8 years beforehand.
His reg. name is 'Marburger Kid', which I think sounds too much like Hamburger Kid, so I call him Beren. Tolkein fans will get the reference and it suits him *much* better.
I've mostly ridden english huntseat and dressage, although I started out western and Beren has lots of fun being a cow chaser. I think it'd be fun to try some team penning with him. We do some trails, starting to do some cross-country, thinking about some endurance training when I get back to the States... I'm a big believer in versatility for both horse and rider.
To put my two cents in about the neck rein vs direct rein question, yes, horses can and (riders too!) should learn both. A 'neck' rein is just an exaggerated form of an indirect rein, a key ingredient in fine-tuned steering. Dressage riders use both, often simultaneously. Also, young horses are typically started with a snaffle bit and a direct rein, whether they are being started 'english' or 'western'. The slackness in a neck rein is a bit misleading since its presence is completely based off the type of bit being used. That's a completely different topic though. :)
...Anyway, enough blathering and back to my pathology presentation. Nice to meet you guys!
Morning all.
Well we're glad to have you:) After I posted to you I thought "if she's in vet school, animals may be the last thing on earth she wants to talk about:)"
Back in the states????? Where are you?
Becky
