The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Heather was telling me about that today. That they said it takes 6-8 years to train one to that level. She's real into the cross country sport. That's what this stable she goes too, that Harley is at specializes in teaching. She asked me if I could sit and watch that forever and not get bored:). I said well probably not, because that is not my forte, but I can watch barrel racing forever.

I've saddled up as soon as a farrier got done. Shouldn't be a problem if they didn't quick him.

Speaking from experience (just found this thread, btw), we have a TW here who is pushing 30 and probably has another 10 years in him. You'd never know he had any age on him but for his telltale teeth.

Please add me to your ping list. I am on a farm in PA with 8 horses, half of whom are retrained racehorses.

If it's a change, like you are having, going from barefoot to shoes, or if they ever are really long and are trimmed, or he changes angles too much, it is good to wait a day or two. The risk is tendon strain. Changing the foot too much changes the length and tension on tendons... You could ride easy tomorrow just do lots of walking and less trotting. I bet he'll play in the pasture more than you'll strain him ;~D

Hair keeps the ping list.

Glad you're here, we need some more people to join our horse talk.

What do you do with your horses?

Welcome to the thread Centaur! I'll add you to the ping list, but know that I usually only ping to this thread ~very~ occasionally.... I use the ping list mostly to ping to other articles on FR that have a horse element....

This thread is just a chat thread you can join in on, we won't ping you very often, If you ever lose track of it, you can alsway find it by looking at my profile page.

Ping!

Hey saddle club group! This is an occasional ping to remind you the thread is here if you want any horse chat - any topic!

Well I'm going to go check on and oil my horse. I'll be dark until dark. Too much to do that can't be done sitting on my butt:') Later.

Let us know how he likes it..... the pony eats up anything I feed her without question, Bay sortof plays lip games with it when it has oil in it, like it felt funny in his mouth. He got used to it!

I haven't had a horse yet that would eat feed with oil on it. I've tried it several times. Maybe I didn't wait them out long enough tho.

Really.... I just start them out with a little bit and work up. Bay never rejected it, he just flapped his lips at it.

I can think of 3 of mine who just didn't eat at all, and I tried just small small amounts, my mare, an arab I use to have and Rusty.

Thanks Becky

We have 3 thoroughbred gelding racehorses; one we've retrained to jump, one was retrained as a lady's pleasure horse (he hates men) and one is my baby...a 16'3 thoroughbred grandson of Secretariat who is my dream horse and has a home for life. I was offered quite a few bucks for him to be a dressage horse, but I figured I'd never own such a quality horse again unless I win the lottery, so if anyone is going to ride him in dressage, it'll be me. HaHa.

My Walker is an old guy who was my scout horse when I used to field trial with my ex. He carried me through hell and high water, rain, snow and sleet for 6 years and he also has a home for life.

I have a morgan mare who is quite well bred but actually we rescued her (long story).

My daughter has a quarter horse that she showed against the thoroughbreds in children's hunter quite a few years ago and he took her all the way to regional reserve champion AHSA...so, he also has a home for life.(pasture ornament as my partner calls him)

We have a 16'3 thoroughbred mare, former race horse who we retrained for jumping. And she'll jump the moon. We bred her last year but it was he first foal and he was stillborn.

And finally, we have a Canadian Sport Horse we just purchased from Manitoba. We pick him up in a month and we're tres excited about this one. I think between him and the mare, we may be doing the jumping circuit one of these days :)

Wow, you have quite a mix. Glad there was a quarter horse in all that. I'm a bit prejudice:)

Right now I have a grade horse that I trail ride on and have started him on barrels. I have a Quarter horse Stud that is my daughters old barrel horse and gets used for trail riding now., and Quarter/Palomino that is not here because he is being tried out by someone who might buy him.

Grandson of Secertariate...Wow! That's cool. Our stud horse is a grandson of Poco Bueno.

Oh, I forgot, I also have a Quarter brood mare. We bred her to our stud this spring. It will be the second time. Her first foal is my daughters new barrel horse who is doing great.

The show jumping that I saw today was some of the worst I had ever seen. I caught it about half way through, but from what I could gather, they all drew horses. Some of the riders were absolutely terrified, you could tell. One horse refused just about every jump because his rider was reining him in so hard, and even the announcer was shouting for him to let the horse go. The horse had his mouth wide open from the pressure. One rider was nearly unseated, and the rest knocked down so many poles that it was unreal. Don't know what it was all about.

I once knew a horse who lived to be 45. (No joke) His name was Dynamite. :-)

Welcome to the thread! If you look back, you'll learn all bout ours, and that we love pictures of yours if you've got them!

I have a 22 year old Arab gelding, pictured on my profile and in the thread graphic.... He is a home-for-lifer. Retired long-distance endurance racer and part time trail horse. Has a bit of Navicular, but is moving really well and feeling good with treatment.

I also have a 6 year old Hackney pony whose only job right now is keeping Bay company...

We will be looking for another horse soon for my new husband. He's a new rider this year when he met me!
