Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Too much oil might give him the runs I 'spose, but with horses when it's dry out, keeping things moving is usually a good thing (within limits)
Start him gradually with a glop of it, and increase up to half a cup. Every day... Every day that you can, if your stable won't do it under your arrangement.
I bought big restaurant sized gallon jugs of oil at the warehouse stores when I was feeding that. I haven't for awhile, but I did when Bay didn't seem to have a lot of shine awhile back. Always fed it to my show horses.
Yeah I was just thinking as hot as it is, it might be good to keep things oiled. Won't hurt to try. I have an 1/8 cup I used to measure the iron. I'll just throw the same amount of oil at first, 3-5 xs a week and see how he does. Can't hurt.
This new guy very friendly and will talk with me about stuff but I have to ask. He just provides the service you ask for. This is only the 2nd visit though. Maybe when he knows Okie better....
Well, I guess I better get my shoes on and start heading towards the job:') I'll try to catch yall on my breaks.
I was just thinking about the amount of oil it might take to actually give him the runs.... When Bay had colic, he got almost two GALLONS of mineral oil, and while it turned his poo a funny yellow color, he didn't get the runs. I think it's a big animal, and you can feed as much as will still just cover the grain or pellets and not be soupy with oil.
You think I can ride today?
Wow that's hot. It's been rather cool in this neck of the woods.
It's miserable here. After the 2 wks of 80's this feels even worse then it would have if the weather had been normal.

I was reading your conversation on The Hobbit Hole and thought you might enjoy a ping to this thread. I saw you are going to be a vet in 4 months. Good for you. Are you going to work on large animals?
Becky
Thanks Becky, I was going to invite her over!
Good afternoon, just got home and I am tryin' to get caught up!
Today when I was taking Heather home we stopped at the local hamburger place in Bixby. Some older gentleman noticed I had spurs on, and asked me if I knew what it would cost to buy a pony for a kid. I gave him my opinion, and he asked if I knew of any for sale. The web site that I posted a link too for the stable where Harley is at had a pony advertised on it. I told him about it, and told him Heather could tell him about it. Well long story short, him and his son in law who was with him jumped up and left to go look at it. Now I'm curious if the bought it.
Becky
Heh.... She can start paying you a commission!
How much was the pony?
I didn't see any jumping today, no.... don't know a thing about decathalon!
Cindy, I won't be riding today, it's still pouring out! If my pasture doesn't green up, It ought to be declared dead!
20 year old Shetland Pony for $500
Becky
~smiles~
Sounds like a fair price! I 'spose that pony doesn't even dump all her riders on the ground at the first opportunity!
The guy at first said that's kind of old....and seemed like he wasn't sure. I told him there was no guarantees on any horse, but that it could still have 5-10 years left.
Later Heather told me the pony was in great shape, still trotted, cantered AND jumped:). It looks so fat in the picture, I'd like to see it jump.
Becky
Maybe it jumps very short jumps! ;~D
People don't realize how long horses live and work... Many of the Olympic horses are in their upper teens. Takes that long to get them to that level!
No ,I meant how long do yall wait after shoeing to ride. It hasn't been quit 24 hrs and I can't remenber but I think the last ferrier told me to wait 1 day, 2, or maybe he said 3.
