Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I think if she seemed like a welcoming personality, she wouldn't be offended that you came by.... It would impress me that you were so curious about the animal. It shows the value you place in him. Maybe call and ask how he's doing and ask if there is a time you can stop by and see him worked....
When Bay was sold to the endurance racer, my friend was a pain to her, and she finally asked him to stop coming over. But Bay had been sold, and Bob was overly critical of what the owner was doing. Bob thought he was too thin.
Well, I thought about it and I think maybe I should wait a bit longer. If they're not calling me to come get him then he must still be in the running. So no news is good news:)
Besides Sat. I have a better excuse to go over there. They're are having a horse show there and Heather will ride in it. I'll go to watch her. I've done it before.
Becky
I think I will like the tree, as long as I keep the branches that hang or grow below the top of the fence line. Anything above that will be OK.
Becky
Very good to go Saturday! and...
as always.....
Remember the camera :~D
I actually didn't think of the camera. I will:)
Becky
LOL...I don't plan on eating her. I wouldn't know how to cut up a whole chicken from the grocery store let alone dress out a live one:)
I just checked momma is back on the nest, I'll move her to a dog crate in the morning. Probably deal with the serial killer then too:(
I've looked at that web site, I'm just not good at figuring out how to navigate around. Took me months to figure this one out.
Becky
Wow that was fast. I don't go to the stables on Wed usually because I have church. When I got home the ferrier had called. He's already shoed him. He's a school teacher and just went over this afternoon. Now all I have to do is mail him a check:')
I've had to put a few sick chicks out of thier misery. That's bad enough. I just lay them on the ground hold the ax over their necks close my eyes and chop. So far it's worked. But I imagine this girl is going to be flopping around and I'll have to keep my eyes open:(....not looking forward to it.
Becky
REad about your cat on the HH. Sorry to here the choice's you have to make. That's tough.
Becky
Thanks.... Can't believe the cat vetting would cost more than the horse colic this year!
Isn't that the truth. I just came in from moving the momma and two babies that hatched thru the night to a dog crate. This stupid chickens sit on their eggs in old horse feeders. It's kind of cramped quarters, and I have no clue how momma expects them to get out of them....I've learned to move them as soon as the eggs start hatching because mom also has stepped on some and killed them because it is cramped. Anyway this morning I put them in the crate, lots of room, and mom steps on one and has possibly broke its leg, it's laying on it's side like it can't get up:(. I so tired of these dam things I'm ready to chop all heads. I don't want these hens sitting on anymore but they just keep doing it. sigh.
How's your eye. I meant to tell you last night I was sorry that happened. That sort of thing really hurts. Hope it's better today.
Becky
Heather is coming to ride this morning. I'm hoping it doesn't get too hot to fast and we can ride for a long time.
Trash is not eating all the oats I am giving him now. There was still some in the bucket from last night. I asked yesterday at the feed store for the price of oats and a bag of oats is the same as a bag of the pellets I use. The amount she is giving him is more then if she gave him the pellets so it would be cheaper.
She has a big race coming up in three weeks, I might wait till its over before I say anything about it too her. Let her season run down, then make the change and see how he handles it.
Becky
Have a good ride!
I am still rumbling to a start this morning, wish I could go back to bed!
It sure says something about the excitement or quantity of the plain oats when they won't finish it...
My horses sure hate this cheap hay I bought. I put them back on the senior pellet to up their nutrition level... When they were on good orchard grass hay, I was feeding just dry COB mixed with a ~little~ sweet. But this local hay they don't even want to nibble for entertainment. I mix in a small flake of the good hay with it for now, while I still have some of that, but they are going to have to get used to it alone eventually.
Your pony isn't really a senior is she?
Becky
No - she's not senior I just don't want to have to buy a bunch of different feeds ;~D I have a little COB mixed in and don't give her much. She only gets 1/3 (about a cup)of a SMALL (1 pound) coffee can enough to keep her out of Bay's pan while he's eating.
Bay is only getting 2/3 of the small coffee can morning and night. The most I've ever fed him in the coldest part of winter is 2 SMALL cans.
You know, I just don't get it. I bought hoof cream for my horse and keep coating him good but the ferrier said his hoofs are really dry. What's next? Manicures?:') I guess it's this heat. The clumps of dirt feel like walking on rocks out there.
External hoof conditioner creams don't do much to correct feet that are really dry. Internal oils would do more good. I am surprised your farrier didn't tell you that. There are supplements like Biotin (but careful, Biotin makes some horses hyper) or you can just add oil in his feed. Corn oil poured over grain works real well for hoof and shiny coat too. Just a glop, up to half a cup of oil with a meal.
Hmm. Want give him the runs? :'). I'll start adding a little oil to his snack and see how that does. (I give hime a couple of cups of pellets with viSorbin). I was giving him the horses secret but I stopped when I put him to pasture.
Is the corn oil daily or just a one time thing?
