The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'd go with 10. It can be hard to judge a horse over a five day period.

My grandson has show and tell today. He took a couple of his toy horses and some pictures of Okie and of himself on the school horse at horse camp. He was practicing his "presentation" last night. He demonstrated clicking and whoas and brought up that you have to stay in the saddle or you will fall off on your butt like Granny did!

My youngest stayed in the dorm. It was a pain. Every break he had to move out. I don't know why registered students can't continue to stay.

Did he have to move all his things as well? Where did he go?

My DIL said that he was ready to show and tell as soon as he got to class:')

Yeah he would have to pack every thing up and move out and come home.

Well I had a good ride today. Did a lot of trotting, and a lot of cantering. Ow, do my muscles hurt! There was some loud thunder in the distance that made the horse spooky. Made friends with some of the borders, and they invited me to go to dinner with them every Friday night after we all finish riding. I thought that was pretty cool. So I'll go when I can.
Well that's all for now. My legs are screaming at me to go to bed. :-)

We saw that horse story on local news.... the horse was rescued, no apparent serious injuries!

Glad you had a good ride Beaker.... We have been prepping this morning for five days of rain, may have to even put the horses in at night.... woo hoo! we need rain sooooo bad.

Hello! Sorry, not to get back to your post sooner. I've been busy getting things organized and doing errands. Wish that I was doing horse things instead of people things. But if I don't get my bills paid, I can't do horse things, so I guess that it evens out.
My ride was really good... I want to schedule two lessons for this week, but I know that i can't. My riding has improved 10 fold, and I actually feel like a half way decent rider now. I've befriended two borders, and we all agreed to go out to dinner on Friday nights after we're done riding. It's good to have horse people to socialize with.
We got a lot of rain here too in addition to some t-storms. I hope that you don't get too much flooding.

Hey guys.

This may be old stuff to yall but I found it interesting.

I picked up a lot of stuff and did some reading on the way back. I found an interesting article from a horse vet in a magazine. She stated that a lot of colic is related to weather changes.

1. The weather is really hot and then a cold front comes in and the temp drops and the horse may not drink as much water because he is no longer hot and gets dehygrated

and/or

2. running around a pasture during a thunderstorm or weaving in a stall during bad weather causes stress and a build up of gastric acids which kill off the good bacteria in the gut and gas producing "bad" bugs increase and gas colic builds up

I'm glad the horse is ok. Did they say how he fell off the cliff?

Glad you got to ride. I'm going to check on mine this evening and try to get 5 days in this next week. Last week a wash. I only got to ride once.

Those are interesting scenarios to be aware of Cindy.

No more colic here since Bay's one episode, thankfully. Hopefully I go another 20 years without that!

Yeah, there were others but this one you can't really do anything to reduce happening.

Yall ever see a horse pick up his back leg and stand on three and the leg bone look like it points towards his side. Okie stands on 3 legs occ and I have never noticed this. When this horse would put the leg down I would see a wave of muscle and then it looked fine. I watched him do this several times and seemed in no discomfort. It almost looked like he was double jointed and throwing that hip out. He was a cutting horse and was very energetic in the show pen though.

Hmmm.... Beyond just standing resting one leg, I am not sure what you are describing...

It was weird. It looked like a bone under the skin out of place. I saw all kinds of unusal stuff at the auction.

I found a 22 y/o QH that was wider than Okie that I really liked. There was a kid on her and she was trying to get the horse to walk around the stall with a halter and two lead ropes but not getting anywhere really. I noticed the horse had a bad cut on her right leg. I started to talking with the owner and asked if he rode her. He said yeah, his grandchild too. He invited me to check her out (the kid gone) and said he was selling her because he had too many horses when I asked. I couldn't get the horse to raise her left front hoof. I walked her around the stall and she was limping a little. She wouldn't let me touch her mouth. When I asked he said she briddled well though. Ears and face no problem. Then he told me she would foal in Feb.

I had really liked the way she looked and took his card and asked if he didn't sell her if he would be willing for me to come see her in a few weeks when the leg healed and see her bridled and rode. He told me, ok but she had "a problem" at feeding time. He said she was his dominant horse and had to be seperated but told me she was registered and excellent bloodlines and has had several prize winning colts.

Sigh. A PG 22 y/o lame, boss brood mare with a hot mouth a little too much for us right now but I really did like the way she looked. I felt really stupid though when I was thinking she was even wider than Okie, and didn't know it was because she was carrying:') She was big all over though and had a beautiful red coat. I don't know why I was drawn to her. I was though. Something in her eyes and the way she looked. If I had my own place and he came way down on the price I might have thought about it twice though.
