The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Once I stumble on the right cue or even worse probably, make a new one and he knows what I want, he usually does it.

He's not usually Johnny Quick. Moest likely he'll just cock his ears in different directions and look back at me like, huh?
LOL. :-) With the horse I ride now, I have to cue exactly or he just doesn't do it.

Home from church, Rusty is saddled, so I'm out of here for and hour or so.

Good morning.

What's on everyone's agenda for the week.

I found out that this overnighter I'm going to is hosted by a trail riding Association called the "Bad Girls" I've heard they are a pretty wide spread oganiztion. Anyone heard of them?

This ride is more to clean up their section of "adopt a trail" trail. I guess they do this once a year. Sat. we will spend a few hours trimming branches and picking up trash. From what I have been told Sat night there will be a pot luck dinner. Once the cleaning is done, as far as riding your on your own after that.

It is in a Park called "Robbers Cave" because of a cave located in the park where robbers such as the James boys, and Belle Starr hid out. I've been there quite a few times, it's a nice place. They have a great "horse" camping park.

We are going to leave Thur. afternoon.

Ah.... now comes the catch!

I have done trail cleanup too, with the local BackCountry Horseman Chapter here that maintains many of the local trails through state lands. Neat thing about that though is we got to go in the early spring when the trails are still closed to the public, as many times as we wanted as long as we did some work.

I haven't heard of the group.... sounds a little risquee.... you sure there won't be a beer chugging contest as part of the event? ;~D

I've never been to one of their events, but I've been told there are some who do drink, but doesn't get crazy.

If I have a good time, I might join. Dana says that they do alot of stuff throughout the year.

The trail clean up will be good for Harley. I trim trails around here all the time, and Rusty has really gotten good at sidepassing over to a branch and standing still while I trim. I can also carry a trash bag on my saddle with him. Not sure how Harley will do with the bag. I might do some conditioning on that here a few times before I go.

I want to join the BackCountry Horseman chapter here when we have two horses and a trailer and can get to the events. I know from friends to stay away from the meetings though, for some reason those groups always end up with several factions and bitter power struggles in them and the meetings are chaos. The rides are good though, especially to go to areas that are new that I wouldn't find on my own.

There is another group here that has a really neat private horse camp right at the edge of the state forest.... But it's an Appaloosa club. You have to have an Appy to join, though I have gone as a guest. It's a neat enough camp that I will go out of my way to look at Appy mares for sale when we really get to looking for a horse for ecurbh.

Howdy! I'm going to be riding a couple of times this week, and I'm getting ready for classes to start soon, so book buying is on the agenda. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

I can't say that I've heard of them, but are they some sort of horseman's gang? ;-)

Mornin', Becky and Cindy!

A few weeks back, one of you told me about a breakfast made by cutting a hole in a slice of bread, placing it in a pan, breaking an egg in the hole, and then frying it. I tried my own variation of this over the weekend. I figured, bagels already have holes in them! So I took a bagel and toasted it lightly (to draw some of the moisture out of it). I lightly oiled the pan with a little olive oil, cracked the eggs into the pan, and then mashed the bagel halfs face down onto the yolks. I let them cook up a little bit, flipped them to make sure both sides were coated, and then let them cook up (I flipped them a few times, and pressed down on them a bit with the spatula to make sure they cooked all the way through). Very yummy! :o)

I know you don't want to believe me :o), but autumn is on the way early this year. We set record lows Friday and Saturday mornings (46 and 44 respectively). A few trees are already beginning to show color.

"Mamo eggs". Mamo probably never ate a bagel in her life but she would have liked this, I bet. It sounds good. I'm going to try it with JJ. He will want to put the egg in the hole though. I let him drop the egg in. I've been showing him how to crack and drop an egg with one hand (my Jack in the box days:'). He's getting there but still needs two hands.

You know , I've been thinking. A donut ... :')

HI!!

Our temps here have been unseasonably cool. High has been in the eightys for the last week. I have to say, I'm really enjoying it. Those days when the humidity was so bad, and the heat index was over 100, I didn't like it.

Your egg and bagel thing sounds good. Must have been Cindy who told you about it.

Well, have you been out again with your friend? I hope you're having fun:)

I think 'gang' sounds about right:)

Actually, I'm not sure. From what choctawsquaw has told me it's a bunch of really nice people who like to ride. I know they do lots of rides that husbands and kids get to go too also. You know, it's usually the women who do all the organizing anyway, might as well get to make it easy once in awhile and only have yourself to worry about:)

I'm really excited:). Mack and Charlie went thru the RV today and got everything tuned up and charged up. They fixed the awning, I've got my grocery list and supply list made out. Camera disc's were at the top of the list:) Talked to CS about food to take. Just 3 more days till we leave:).

Oh, just FYI, this is my first time to go in the RV without Mack. I'm not really worried, but then again.......:) I just hope I don't run into road construction, that's the only thing I worry about. It's a 28 ft RV, then add the horse trailer. I've done it before but Mack was with me. I also drove it home for my sons by myself, but I wasn't pulling a trailer then.

I just wasn't patient enough. My TETRA stuff here. Some really interesting stuff going on in Texas :') I got my membership card (Eddie too) and a car decal and this big round sticker about the size of a plate. I don't know what that goes on unless a trailer. I was looking thru the updates though and what's this about the feds trying to get a law passed to put microchips in every horse? :'(
