The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

choctawsquaw and her husband stopped by this evening. We ran down to watch Kristy ride. She is liking him more and more. He did great. I didn't get to see him do any barrel work. We were late getting there. But she loped some circles, and did some flying lead changes. He really looked good. He really had a work out today. I rode him 3 hours then she worked him pretty good for 1 1/2. But you know, he didn't act like he was tired at all. He was still going pretty good doing circles.

I ride English also..... but mostly trail now because that is what my horse does best, and I haven't had a lot of interest in showing anymore. I used to show Arabs and jumped them some too. Would someday love to have a big ole warmblood that could do hunter and dressage.

With the potassium issue, what did you feed him?

Good for her.

We had a horse that was Impressive bloodlines too. When he started having problems he couldn't rope any more which is what my son did on him. We sold him to a lady who rode him about 2 times the first year she had him, and hasn't ridden since. Just likes having him around. He's only had one bad spell since she got him, so he's a pretty happy camper.

Yeah, that was all on Harley, sorry. No she knows he's for sale. She's just helping me out. I told her before she started riding him that she couldn't get attached:). I told her if she gets him running she can keep anything she wins on him. I hope I can sell him for enough that I can give her something when I sell him.

Her horse Rowdy is at the point where he is so automatic that there's nothing left to do with him except go. She likes the training, and has been wanting one to work with. You know her and Charlie are a young couple, just had a baby, so their really not in the postion to buy another horse. They have 2 now. So her riding Harley keeps it interesting for her and helps me.

Are you advertising or marketing him yet? Or are you still working him up?

I've put up a few flyers. Kristy is going to try to have him ready to start exhibitions by Sept. when there is some big barrel race. We'll let it be known then that he is for sell.

I think I'll do better with him if he is doing some discipline. I'd like it to be barrels. The only thing I could say in the flyer no is that he has the potential to do anything.

The flyer can say 'he has the potential to do anything' and have a pic of him riding trail with you, running a barrel with Kristy, and one with english saddle on with Heather :~D

Just likes having him around
That's really nice Pay, reminds me of the story by James Harriott where the old farmer kept his two ancient horses on "retired like" just grazing in the pasture. :) HOTD My mom had to feed her horse grass hay (no alfalfa) and some oats. He had a couple spells of mild colic a couple times over the past 3 years, and we thought it was from nibbling some bushes close to the fence. Perhaps it was this stone instead. Don't know, but it is sad to see them go before they are old. I'm happy we could help ease the passing though, it would have been agaonizing in the wild...

I see you tag line. He reminds me of a horse. Hair can you draw horizontals ? His configuration looks off to me. :')

That's pretty much what the flyer said:). I believe it to be true with him. The problem is everyone thinks that of their horses, especially the ones they want to sell:). I'm hoping we can get him running barrels and winning. The barrel people around here are nuts. They will pay astronomical prices for a horse that is winning. More then they can possible win back even.

Yeah - it's ain't about winning money.... People pay a fortune for show horses too, and all you win are ribbons and little statues. ;~D
