The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I have a computer question.

While pictures are loading on my host site, can I go ahead and click on to another window? Will if finish loading if I'm looking at another site? or stop?

How very sad! to hear her cryin'. Hope she makes friends with your boys.

Here's what you got from the pics: Different horses so you'll have to identify for us!.... the fifth one from the email was just a blur... But here are the other 4 :~D.

You should be able to keep looking at other windows. I do. If the first 'job' is taking a lot of your bandwidth, it may be slow to load something else, but it will keep going, so you can read another thread or something while you wait.

The last two are Kristy on Rowdy, my DIL:)

The other two were just pictures I took of other riders, hoping some would come out to post.

Oh, and the new horse is a HE:)

The first picture of Kristy is going around the 3rd barrel. She tipped it but it didn't fall, you can see how close she was too it. The last picture is the first barrel. I couldn't take the 2nd barrel because my flash might have bothered the horse, my son told me that after I took one of another rider, oops.

Well, they do look good! Indoor action photography is a tough challenge... And with digitals, you have less choice over shutter speed and things that we did with the old 35mms.

I don't know a thing about photography, but I have really enjoyed this camera. It's so much fun to be able to see what you have immediatly, and not have to pay for them:)

It's 10:45 PM right now, why?
I was just curious. And slightly confused, but I remembered that shows usually do run late. For some reason I thought that you were farther behind in time then you are.
Yup, I ride motorcycles. My dad has a 49 panhead. My stepdad used to have a sportster, then he got a state police bike. Heehee. One time, as a joke, his friend dressed up in a blue t-shirt and a blue cap with jeans, and looked exactly like a cop. He stood beside the police bike with its hazards on, (They look exactly like the flashing emergency lights) and he held a hair dryer, which looks a lot like a radar gun when you're flying down the road. We had so many people slowing down to the speed limit, it was hysterical. I'll have to dig up the pictures.

Good morning.

Just got up, and it's raining. Heather wont' be coming. I don't ride in the rain:( Yuk.

The radar looks like it will clear up later this afternoon, maybe then.

My Sportster is the first motorcycle I've ever rode. I got it about 5 years ago. I've never really gotten comfortable driving one, and prefer riding with Mack on the Goldwing. We are actually trying to sell it. I rode it once last summer and haven't been on it since.

We went to Sturgis in 2001, and I did 700 miles in about 4 days up there. But at the end of 4 days I was so wore out from nerves, that's when I parked it. Have you been there. Sturgis is a very little town and during bike week about a half a million bikers show up. They all do about 110mph, most of them are drunk and the few that aren't are inexperienced riders like me. It's scary:) The week we were there 7 people were killed.

Actually I spent more time getting there and back then I was there. It was about a one hour drive. It was just a jackpot barrel race too, nothing else. They had 50 runners. I got there about 7:45 and left at 9:00. Kristy was the 20th runner. We left after she ran, the baby was getting fussy, and we knew she wasn't going to place. The first place winner was a 16.06.

I used to work for a home health agency and at times drove the black rodeo. It had a Texas emblem on the door with our location. At the time the company didn't think about it but from a distance the jeep looked a lot like a DPS vehicle. People would constantly slow down when they saw it coming.

I've been out all morning trying to get a good picture of this horse. But I guess because it's such a dark dreary day, none of them are coming out good. I'll try again later this evening when I can stand on the other side of him. Right now he won't go out into the arena, he's staying at the side where the other horses are. Makes the light on the wrong side.

I think I'm going to go nap:). Looks like its going to rain awhile.

It's quite an experinece during bike week. But the country up there is beautiful, there is so much to see in a relatively small area. I'd like to go back, but not during bike week.

The Goldwing we have is the second one we've had. I didn't like the first one because it made me feel old:). I like HD's best especially the really loud ones. But you know what, I am old now and like my comfort. The Goldwing is sooooo much more comfortable riding double then the big HD we have. More room. When we got back from Sturgis is when we bought the new Goldwing. I'm at the age now I'll sacrafice cool anytime for comfort:)

Heehee. Yeah, the louder they are the better. I can't stand the imitation wannabe not-Harleys that are out there. Nor can I stand the wannabe bikers. The bike that I'm going on today is a Heritage Soft-tail. My uncle has seven bikes sitting in his garage, so he loaned my dad one, because he's rebuilding his. Just powder coated the frames. I can't drive Harley's myself, they're too big, but I've been riding since I was about 4.

I've seen some very small women riding soft tails. My husband tried to talk me into one once I learned how to ride the Sportster, but I just don't like driveing them.
