Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Post on it if you'd like... it's kind of fun. I learned something dissecting their structure in photograps by actually drawing on them today.
I'm on my way out the door till evening.... meeting our host, Mr. JimRob tonight at a FReeper function.
I believe it was an original, but still wanted all tho when they started crossing in TB, you don't see that many typey QH any more. Alot of breeders are trying to get back to that, and have actually started another Registry the Foundation Quarter Horse Ass.
The picture is not Wimpy, but is just a painting by the artist depicting what the AQHA wanted. I believe the painting was commissioned by the AQHA, and painted according to the standards they asked for. Wimpy was the first Horse registared as a QH but is very close to the painting. I don't know if that was on purpose or if it was coincedence.

I saw that shoulder. Thought maybe it was the light.
My son just came in and I was asking him to help me understand the above posts of Hair's with the horse diagram, I'm kind of slow about things like angles and horizontal.
I showed him the different horse pictures, and he said that mare wasn't all that bad, just not balanced, but that she had good legs, and they were under her good. Just that she was lite in her hip. Getting more weight on her would help. If she has a good mind she'd be OK, just on the plain side as far as looks.
I went to take some better profile shots of my horses but the battery on my camera gave out. It's charging now.

2 Questions.
Are the top two pictures both Bay?
Does the humerous (sp) move or is it stationary and the other bones move off it?
Becky
Well, I put in temperment first and the age and she popped up. If they aren't firm about the price she might be a good fixer upper but I have concerns about her carrying our wt right now. If I could just pasture her it wouldn't be a problem but I really don't want to pay board for something we can't ride right now. That defeats the purpose of the second horse .
I just wanted to let you know she may not have been as bad as I was making her out to be. Too a fault I want pretty:). Mack is constantly reminding me that color and long manes and tails aren't as important as will they kill me or not:). I'm real bad to judge on looks and forget about temprament. Bay horses are my favorite, and I tend to think ALL bay horses are beautiful. So I have to be careful and deliberatly put out of my mind color and look at confirmation.
When I bought Rusty, he was in such bad bad shape. I cannot begin to tell you how bad he looked. And the deal was to trade straight across for a paint horse I had that was drop dead gourgeous but had a problem I was tired of dealing with. But Rusty had bones sticking out all over, bare spots where saddle, cinch, and saddlebags had rubbed down to the skin, his head looked as big a a pump jack and his ears looked as long as a mules. He was wormy so his coat was long and rough. My first thought when I saw him was "you want me to trade my beautiful paint for that, you've got to be kidding". After riding awhile and watching Rusty go, I finally got past the bad and looked to see what the potential was. I was surprised that when I looked at him with that in mind he looked alot better.
When Charlie saw him the first time the next week he told me I had done good:). And IMO, Rusty has surpassed even what I thought would be there with care. He actually grew into his head and ears, something I didn't really think he would. Charlie was actually the only one at first that thought he would come out OK.

You can draw lines on this one:)

Yes, those are both Bay. In the top one, his coat looks funny because he was wet from a bath. And it's a more recent pic than the bottom one, which is a few years old.
Yes, the humorus moves, if only degrees. You can see in the pic where it has pushed the shoulder up or pulled it down. And the leg pivots side to side at the humorous when moving sideways.
Great action shots! Wow they play! Just got home, need to catch up here, posts some pics of the freeper meet, and then I'll draw lines!
Waiting for the pictures:')
No hurry.
Another question. In the one post with the skeleton horse:), you said something about the canon bone. Is that the bone above the knee or below the knee? I've always thought it was below? from knee to pastern?
Anyway your commet about it, that for a smooth ride you want a long humerous and a long canon....the juries still out on that one for me. The man that taught Charlie to rope and has taught him lots of stuff has always told us to look for short canon bones, as horses with long canons tend to be more prone to bowed tendons. Now remember he is looking at it from a team ropers point of view, dragging a cow around would put strain on legs. I've wondered if there is merit to that theory?

Actually, that build with the long humorus and long cannon gives you a long stride, and pretty knee action to look at, like Harley or Bay, but not necessarily smooth. Bay's trot isn't smooth. And yes, short cannon are what cowboy sports like, but probably still the long humorus. Western sports they want that low knee action daisy cutter trot.
Ok. Longer stride, not necessarily smoother. Charlie was also telling me that the back of the back legs should be under their butt, they're better if they slope in like Harleys do in the picture of him tied to the trailer, altho I think he was bowed up a bit in that picture, I was trying to catch him in a postion that showed he was nervous tied to the trailer. Rusty's legs are a little to straight as seen in the above picture, but they are under him. If the back legs are out behind the horse naturally, they will have trouble working off their back end, which makes them rougher. You want some angle in them. Am I clear?:)
And of course I'm talking about what is ideal, and you very seldom find one ideal. You just try to get close:)
Becky
:')
Looks like yall had a good time:')
Yeah - glad I went... It's easy for me to talk myself out of going to like that when it comes right down to it... but if I get out the door I usually end up glad to have gone.
I think my husband has horses on his brain now. He's going to a cousins funeral tomorrow. He asked me where the camera was in case he wanted to take some pictures for me. I'm like "do what? Uh, that's ok." He started laughing and stated one of the horse adoption ranches on the way and he thought he would drop in on the way home.
