The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Just looking at pics of horses on line for sale and trying to learn. This one taller than Okie but weighs less. She looks thin to me and her butt looks different. What should I be looking at?

The most offensive thing about that picture is that the horse appears to be tied to a barbed wire fence. :~o

I'm amazed at how poorly some people present horses. The way she is standing there looking like a cow, I can't tell if she has fair basic leg conformation or not. She looks light, may be thin, may also be young. Might be a fine pleasure horse there. What is she, how old is she and what's the price?

I am not a good judge of anything but Arab conformation, often getting the answer wrong on these questions in horse magazines. I think people who know QH and TB type conformation better than I do would say she has a small light hip where they would want a lower and wider, larger hip and rear end. What you could see is that the point of her hip is higher, her tailbone higher and her butt more horizontal than quarter horse people like.

But for a pleasure horse, those details may never cause you problems. She just isn't muscled. More groceries and some regular exercise would fill her out.

Reg QH. 13years/16 hh 1050 lbs. temp of 8 woods, trails, hunting. lesson or beginner horse. asking 1000.

Taller than we want, I think. Eddie short also. Just comparing to Okie, I don't know what I see but I see differences.

Pretty sorry looking QH. But on the other hand it is very difficult to take good pictures of horses. They're hard to photograph. Being that tall and with that head I'd say somewhere in it's background you'd find throughbred.

It's not a flattering picture. And seeing her in person, and how she carries herself would tell you whether her size is a problem or an asset. And whether she is ~really~ 16 hh. I am amazed that most people guess at height, and most think their horse is about 15.2 Bay is a ~measured~ 15.2 and people think he's HUGE for an Arab.

She has a nice straight back for 13. She hasn't been overloaded like Bay has.

Yeah. It was just puzzling me because I was seeing something about her hips/backside that seemed different but not able to pin point what.

Well, lets look at them side by side and compare... This will be good for us both! I also found a shot of Harley to compare in the mix.

Mack wants me to tell you he says you are looking at what is commonly called a "Dink" in this area:)

Of the 3 Okie has the most look of old foundation QH. Short and wide. Harley, IMO, is a little to lanky to have classic QH confirmation, but he has alot of good points to my taste. I like big butts:) and small heads.

Did the site give any of his/her bloodlines? That can tell you alot?

I have drawn lines on them to help compare. Maybe Becky and Mack can tell you if I am right. Like I said.... I don't know much 'bout QHs.

When looking at a horse, if you draw an imaginary line from the point of the hip to the point of the buttock, and from the top of the shoulderblade to the front point of the shoulder, the two lines should be as close to the same length and symmetrical as possible. Too far out of whack and the horse looks unbalanced.

HHHHMMMMM.....that's interesting, I've never heard that. I think the line on Okie's hip is set a bit low. I think because of his color it's hard to see the point of his hip. What you think Cindy?

I cannot tell you lot's of time what's wrong with a horses confimation, but it's obvious that something is out of whack with the sorrel. Now if the horse has a good mind an does what you want, and it's confirmation problems won't lead to some soundness problem, it wouldn't matter. Personally tho:), I like my horses to look pretty too, besides being safe. You just have to decide for yourself how important looks are.

I don't know what it does to the comparison to throw an Arab into it. They are supposed to have a different butt. The croup (hip to point of the tail) in an Arab is desired to be near level, instead of the long sloping topline QHs have. So from a silhouette, his butt looks the most like that mare's. But his hip to point of buttock line should still be long. That mare just has a pretty light rear end. Even still, I bet she could look a lot better than she does, if they stood her up straight. It isn't a fair picture.

Does that theory work on any breed? Do Bay:)
I'd say his is going to come out right too. I'm interested to see. I like the he looks, but I can't tell why...understand??

It is har to find the butt bones on Okie. His hip may be bigger than I show.

If you find one of the rest of mine do them too. I'll check back tonight, we have to go to a wedding of a boy that works for us.

I think that's a neat formula, and it came out right as far as what I like. I do think Okies hips are higher up.

From now on when I look at one, I'll post a picture and you can red line it for me:)

I knew he'd come out good:)

I do agree that the picture of that mare may just be a bad picture. But she is awful light in the butt, and would probably be that way even filled out, maybe just not as bad.

Gotta go.

Bay's poor sway back has worked harder than that mare's though... I hardly ever take profile pics of him. ;~D
