The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

There are irritating people in every facet of human life... That much we can count on!

Good morning.... just about to have a little breakfast here before I have to go to work!

LOL.

A while back at church we were discussing capital punishment. Timothy McVeigh came up and I said something about "when they put him down". They all thought that was such a funny way to put it. One man said "you've been around animals tooooo much".

I also say "whoa" to my car all the time:) Funny how horse language creeps into everything.

My DIL, is coming this morning to ride in the arena. Her horse is so automatic on barrels, that there really isn't much else to "train" him on. He's at the point she just needs to ride him and as long as he keeps doing them correctly not do barrels at all except at competitions. She has been wanting to work with a young one. So she's going to try Harley. She won $60 Tues. nite at a jackpot. So she is really pump up:)

You know I'm just not ready to RUN on a horse yet. Rusty is so lazy that he really has to be pushed to get him going, which is fine by me:) But I don't think it's going to take much to get Harley to RUN. Not that he's a crazy, he just doesn't seem to mind moving out. I don't want to hold him back too much or that might train the "run" right out of him. I think he could be ready to at least do some exhibitions in just a few weeks. So Kris is going to run on him for me. I'll keep working with Rusty and hopefully before long I'll get there too:). I think it's easier for younger people to do it.

I'd really like to get him sold before winter, so I've got to start getting him out to places for people to see him.

It's people that are the problem where most horse problems are.
Exactly. :-)
No worries about the comments on English and Dressage. :-)

We were so busy, testing different bits and discussing his "training" I forgot to take pictures, but I am hauling him down to the arena in town this evening for her to ride him again, I will remember then. She isn't taking him around barrels yet. She's just getting use to him first. She may go around them tonight. She's like Heather, knows more about how to get him to do stuff that he knows then I do. Kristy had him pivoting, I've never learned how to do that, he knows, I don't. I knew he knew alot.

We're going to try some different bits on him tonight. I don't have a big selection and they're too expensive to buy something you're not sure will work. Kristy has some differnt ones, and also has access to some with some people she knows that I don't.

Well it's alot cooler today, so I'm off to ride the mare, tomorrow should be my last day with her. But Kristy has a friend who found out I'll ride horses for money, that is suppose to be calling me to ride one for her. I've been wondering how much of a demand there is for someone to ride just for conditioning and not training. It amazes me that people will pay for that.

Well, the new ferrier coming out today at 4PM. I hope Okie doesn't have to go back on shoes. His feet don't look right to me though. Sigh. I wish I knew more. Maybe this one will talk to me.

I have a problem I need some advise on. This morning while Kristy and I were in the arena with the horse, two half grown kittens from our new neighbors showed up. I think they were attracted to our voices. They are so cute....BUT I'm very worried about my dogs.I have a cat too, but he lives here, knows the dogs, they know him and don't hardly pay any attention to him. But they were very interested in these kittens. One seemed brave and when they ran at him he arched his back and hissed and they would back off, the other one would turn and run for a tree which was the wrong thing to do. I finally put Susie in the house (she's actually the one I'm most worried about, the other two went in the horse trailer. After Kristy left, I carried them back to their property, no ones home right now, but they would not stay there. They followed me back home. So I went ahead and rode, thinking with no one around they'd go on their own. I thought for awhile after I got home they had left, so I let the dogs out, but they're up in a tree in my front yard:

This is waiting at the bottom:

I truely do not mind them coming over here, I just don't want to find a kitten slaughtered all over my yard:(. I can't get them to go home. If I take them when someone's home the people will know/think if their cats don't come home someday who to blame, and I don't want to get on bad terms with neighbors, besides, I think Grizzly goes over there sometimes and plays with their dog....I can't keep my dogs locked up all the time. What to do????

I would take them home when someone is home anyway. It's better for the cats, and I don't think that it would put you on bad terms with your neighbors if you're looking out for the welfare of their kittens. :-)They're cute little things! Are your dogs known to be agressive towards cats, or just curious about them?

"Who to blame" would be the person who lets their kittens run loose onto your property, knowing that you have dogs. The responsibility is theirs, not yours.

Well, that's what I did. I took them back, and guess what, they weren't their cats. She said they were at her house last night and she was worried HER dog would kill them. She was glad this morning that they were gone. And BTW, they like Grizzly:). She said he is a funny dog, sits in their chairs like he does here. Likes him to come over to play with her dog.

Anyway, back to the cats, I went down to the next house, where they have 2 German Shepherds. I saw one in the pen so figured they were both there. Went up to the door and knock and two young boys came to the door and said yes those were their cats. About that time I heard growling and looked behind me and there was a huge dog with his hair standing up snarling, I pushed the kids out of the way and went in the house.

Those boys said, "Oh Jim won't hurt you." :) Yeah right...Jim looked pretty unhappy to me. They held his collar while I ran up the road, I stopped and picked up two big rocks just in case. Jim was pulling pretty hard to get away, and the kid holding him was not that big.

If they show up here again, I'm not going to worry, but I sure don't want to find a dead kitten:)

I think my dogs are just curious really, but they play pretty rough, especially Susie. I've seen her get our cat down and had to stop her.

The thing is about a month ago when I had those baby chicks in the dog crate. She always watchs them, and gets real intense. If the chicks get to running around much she will jump at the crate and paw and bite at it. Well, she got hold of one who stuck it's head thru:(, bit it right off. I had to put the crate up high. Now that she has killed soemthing it seems to me she is even more intense about watching the chicks, and the kitten that ran away she went after it. If they would stand their ground I think they'd be OK, but when they run, she gets overly excited. If she got it down, then I would be afraid the other 2 would join in. It wouldn't be pretty.

I guess I should tell you, she never looks twice at the big chickens, I think a rooster got after her once:). Just the chicks, and really only when they run away, which chicks always do:( They're big enough now to be in the coop and it has fencing that they cant' stick their heads thru. She lays and watches them, but can't get them in there.

What doesn't look right, and why don't you want him on shoes? Take pictures of his feet for us if you want.

My dog is the same way, he'll chase after the cat only if she runs. In fact, the dog instigates the cat all the time just so he can chase her. In fact, one time she was sleeping on the couch and he walked up to her and let out this great big WOOF right in her face with his tail wagging. Well she shot straight up in the air like someone had electrocuted her and off they went around the house. It stopped when someone tackled the dog.

I didn't tell you? It may just be normal, I don't know. His hoofs were cracking on the sides and the shoes were lose so we left them off. Now the bottom of his feet have grooves. I don't know how to explain it but it would be like his hoof , looking down at a gum with irregular teeth and some teeth just completely gone. I was told that it's normal to not be smooth but it looks extreme to Eddie and I but we aren't experts. Anyway, he was tripping a little and picked up that rope so we just want him to check Okie. I'm changing clothes so I can head on out in a few minutes and get him out of the pasture.

If they show up here again, my DIL said she would take them. I don't know if that's the right thing to do. But these people don't take very good care of their dogs. The GS was rather thin, and I've heard from other neighbors that the dogs are aggressive because the people do nothing with them. I've had to chase them off from here before for chasing my chickens. I'm sorry now I took those poor cats back down there. I didn't realize my DIL was serious when she said this morning that she would take them.

LOL. The funny thing about my cat and dog, is the CAT instigates the playing around here. Susie will just be laying on floor sleeping and the cat jumps on her. But like I said once they get to playing Susie has gotten Bink down on his back. I try to remember to put the cat out when I go some place. I've heard of people who have JR's for years and come home and find the cat slaughtered all over the living room.
