The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah - there was that problem..... we just found it on another thread. A glitch while JohnRob works on the forum I think!

Nope, no riding today. Sadly, not until the end of the week. But it gives me something nice to look forward to.

Well I had a scare today. I've been kind of riding conservative but today I took Okie on the "loop". He didn't want to leave the area and needed encouragement. There is a nylon rope connected to the barn and fence. When it's up, we are to stay off the grass. Other times it just lays on the grass. I have probably walked Okie over it at least a 100 times. Today he started backing up and got it behind his back legs and the more he backed the higher it rose. I though about bailing but he was going back and sideways. I pulled back with the reins with my left hand and held on to the horn with my right. He backed about 20 feet before he stopped. Then he was fine. I was shook up though. My husband there and said he was backing because I was pulling too far back on the reins to get him to stop. He said he wasn't worried. Funny caz that horse usually stops on a dime. The waa in whoa is usually all he needs. I don't even know if he knew the rope there or fussing about leaving the riding area.

We continued south after I calmed:') I even went to the area I fell. I didn't want to and didn't like it but I did. More work than fun today though. I should have been like this the next day and not now. Some reason I was spooked from the time I started to mount to I got off. Couldn't relax. Ever have days like that? Maybe because I haven't rode since Thur. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Don't know what was wrong with me.

Today when I put Okies briddle on I was talking to him and telling him you said no clanks and that I was going to listen. I did my part silently. I slid the bit right in and them clanking started. He chomps the bit a few times after it's in his mouth.

Then when I went to take it off I told him I had to help him so I'm slowly bringing the head stall down and reach to guide the bit. It wasn't there. He had already spit it out with clanking:')

Oh yeah, you bet dollars to pay that I have days like that. :-) Like sitting on a ticking bomb.
What is the loop?

It's that road in my pictures that loops around the stable property.

Oh ok! My barn has one of those too. It's also rumored that they have trails too... And I think that there's truth to that, but I just don't know where they are.

Cindy - Okie sounds like he did great when his legs got snagged in the line.... Excellent reaction on his part, some horses get wiggy about that stuff and he's a good one.

About your nerves.... we do that to ourselves sometimes. Hard to know when it is us psyching ourselves out or when we are supposed to listen to those inner voices. Sounds great that you stuck it out and made yourself go, but not too far. Good middle ground.

Anyway all, sorry I haven't added much to the conversation lately... Been busy and not much happening on the horse front.

Yeah, I was concerned about his feet and started not to even ride him until the ferrier looks at him and then I was thinking about the stories I had read about horses falling and got worked up. I don't think I want to walk him over a rope again though. I'll have to think about it. Everyone does and I have plenty of times before with no problems though. When he finally stopped he just stood patiently for Eddie to pull it out after he loosened it.

I'd be cautious about riding him over anything he could get caught in. I'd lead him over it.

Yep. That's what I was thinking. That means I have to get off and back in the saddle again though :') Oh well, good practice.

I've been riding every morning on the mare. Heather came yesterday and rode Rocky. She was suppose to come again today, but we are getting rain here this morning. It should end fairly soon, but that will make it extremely humid. We have a cold front moving thru tonight and the next couple of days its only suppose to get in the 80's:).

I went to the playday again last night to watch Blake. Forgot the camera:(. They ran barrels, and poles. I guess when school starts, in a few weeks, the will go to every other Tues. thur Oct.

I took Harley to the arena in town Mon. It's the first time I've hauled him to an arena and rode him. He got right in the trailer here and coming home:) And he was real good down there for being unloaded in a strange place.

I'm going to try to work on my arena this morning, before/after the rain. Our bobcat is broke down so I cant' work up the ground, but it is growing weeds, so I'm at least going to mow it. They're getting pretty tall.

So are your working at that job?

Becky

I'm not working the 'other' job, but I am working a new one, that is part time and here in town - 8-12:30. It's only temporary till October. It'll be good as soon as I build it into my routine, yesterday was the first day, and when I got home, I still felt like I had worked a whole day and only wanted to veg afterwards. ;~D Just sensory overload.

I can't stay long though, gotta get ready and go soon!

Well for a while I imagine there will be no problem as far as her going trail riding again. I was told it was a 1 time thing, not to be reapeated for at least a year:)
The little sister did not come yesterday. I guess since Heather didn't get to come last week at all and mom Knew I wanted to get out on the trails before it got hot, they didn't take the time to let her ride. Heather was suppose to come again today, but it's raining this morning. By the time the rain passes it will be too hot.

Even tho I much prefer hot weather to cold, I don't do well physically at a certain point. I've heat stressed in the past so that makes me prone to it. Like last night at the playday, just sitting in the shade I had sweat rolling off me and was feeling puny and everyone else seemed fine. I have to be careful, and just won't ride much past 11:00 in the morning. Then again after dark. It's a horrible feeling. and getting worse as I get older.

Well that doesn't sound to bad, once you adjust.

I'd like to find a job I could work 4-5 hours a few days a week.
