Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Ahhh Good. Sounds like a good plan.... understand that I get a little worried when folk who may not know better end up with a young horse as a first horse and get in over their heads. I've seen it happen. Sounds like you have a plan that makes a lot of sense.
Careful round penning. Lunging or round pen work is not recommended for yearlings, and not frequently or for very long until they are more than 2, or 3 for a slower maturing breed. Tight and repetitive circling does a lot of damage to a young horse's joints. If you want to do some more advanced work with him to prep him, ground driving would be better.
over here:')
You have any pictures of him?
I did sortof force myself into a little ride.... Bareback in my woods, didn't want to saddle him up because his cinch rub from last week is still not covered over with hair, and frankly it is too hot out.
Had ecurbh take some pics just to prove I finally went :~D BTW... I am not that sweaty, I had sprayed my head with the hose before getting on ;~D
Me and my shadow...
That is so cute. I saw her following ecurbh to the hay today.
Bay looks good too. Amazing how fast he recovered
I think he feels ~pretty~ good. He's really bored. There's nothing good in the pasture, all dried out, he spends a lot of time at the gate hoping we'll come over. He really appreciates getting some attention.
MMMM. They do take up time. I envy you though. I live in a sub division . I'm citified but was raised country and long for a place where I could just go out and see my horse. He's stabled right now.
I love to ride bareback when it's hot out. Horses like it better too. :-)
Once you get pictures we can show you how to post. I didn't know how til last week. Once you do it it's not that hard. I've learned how to post and crop and zoom in and stuff but I still don't know how to hook up the camera to the computer. :')
How do you get on and off though? Doesn't it hurt?
I get on by climbing up on fence rails high enough to slip over... When I was young I could actually swing up from the ground if you can believe that! Bay's too tall or I still could, right ;~D
It's definately a little more unsteady if he were to bolt on me. It takes me a minute to remember how to balance and move with him that way and not feel precarious. Used to ride bareback exclusively as a kid. Loved it. I think it's comfortable for short walking rides. I wouldn't go all day like that :~D
I was reading about getting on and off and came across emergency dismounts. I thought I might start practicing in a month or so standing still and then progress as I could tolerate.
Bareback you can just hug their neck and swing down.... can't do that western... if you are gonna bail, just remember to kick both feet out of the stirrups before you swing over... It may not be pretty, but you fall worse if you hang in the stirrup!
Yeah, I bought a book actually designed for trainers. It talks about dropping the reins, taking both feet out and landing on your feet (which would be nice:'). I would like to feel comfortable that I can safely get off any time I want. We'll see.
Nah, it doesn't hurt at all.
Getting on is a scientific calculated process if I'm alone, but if I'm not, I just get a leg up.
hehe. I meant does it hurt riding. I've seen a few people fly on and then moan a few seconds before straighting up and head out :')
Here you go.
...these are the kids. The boy here is my nephew Timmy, and his sister Aly.
And their brother Davy (I love his smile!)
